Deekah, Fractal Theorist
The Commander
Magecraft — Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell, create a 0/0 green and blue Fractal creature token. Put X +1/+1 counters on it, where X is that spell's mana value.
: Target creature token can't be blocked this turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast instants and sorceries to trigger Magecraft, generating Fractal tokens sized by each spell's mana value, then push damage through with Deekah's unblockable ability. You build a board of large creatures purely through your spellcasting, ramping into big spells that make even bigger Fractals.
Strengths
- Each spell builds your board, turning card draw and removal into threats
- Mono-blue gives access to deep card advantage, counterspells, and protection
- Unblockable ability lets even a single big Fractal close games fast
- Scales naturally with expensive spells and spell-copy effects
Weaknesses
- Fractals are 0/0 base, so any board wipe or counter removal can erase your work
- Relies heavily on Deekah being on the battlefield to generate value
- Mono-blue lacks efficient creature removal and struggles against go-wide boards
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate slowing recursion and to fast aggro before you stabilize
Key Cards
- Doubling Season — Doubles the +1/+1 counters on every Fractal, instantly making your tokens enormous.
- Hardened Scales — Cheap counter amplification that makes each Fractal noticeably bigger.
- Archmage Emeritus — Stacks a second Magecraft trigger to draw cards alongside every Fractal you create.
- Inexorable Tide — Proliferate on every spell grows your Fractals even larger over time.
- Thrasta, Tempest's Roar — Not in color—instead lean on copy spells; consider Twincast to double both the token and the spell's effect.
- Murktide Regent — Big mono-blue threat that complements a spell-heavy graveyard, though Fractals usually carry the game.
Upgrade Path
Add counter multipliers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution-style effects in color are limited, so prioritize Hardened Scales and proliferate sources) and spell-copy engines like Twincast, Reverberate effects, and Thousand-Year Storm to double Magecraft triggers. Improve protection with counterspells and ward effects (Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots) so Deekah survives, and lower your curve with efficient cantrips to chain triggers. Top-end finishers like a copied X-spell or Stroke of Genius-style payoffs convert your card flow into lethal Fractals.
