Nezahal, Primal Tide
The Commander
This spell can't be countered.
You have no maximum hand size.
Whenever an opponent casts a noncreature spell, draw a card.
Discard three cards: Exile Nezahal. Return it to the battlefield tapped under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.
Guide
Gameplan
Resolve a giant uncounterable 7/7 that turns every opponent's noncreature spell into card draw, then bury the table in resources while protecting itself with the discard-to-blink ability. You win by leveraging an overflowing hand into card advantage, counterspells, and big finishers.
Strengths
- Massive, persistent card advantage every time opponents cast removal or interaction
- Built-in protection: dodges counters on cast and blinks away from targeted removal or board wipes
- No maximum hand size synergizes with wheels and big-hand payoffs
- Body is a real 7/7 clock that demands answers
Weaknesses
- Seven mana and a single-color identity limits ramp and interaction options
- Vulnerable to exile, sacrifice, and -X/-X effects the blink can't dodge if you lack cards to discard
- Card draw is reactive—does nothing against creature-heavy or noncombat decks that cast few spells
- Can paint a target as the obvious threat at the table
Key Cards
- The Reality Chip — Turns your bloated hand into a relentless source of card advantage by letting you play off the top.
- Mystic Remora — Stacks with Nezahal to punish noncreature spells, drawing absurd numbers of cards early.
- Rhystic Study — Doubles down on taxing opponents' spells for cards alongside Nezahal's trigger.
- Cyclonic Rift — Overloaded, it clears the board so your 7/7 closes out the game with a full grip behind it.
- Reliquary Tower — Redundant insurance for your no-maximum-hand-size plan and a free land slot.
- Force of Will — Free counterspell you can pitch from a huge hand to protect Nezahal or stop a combo.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault) and blue rituals to deploy Nezahal earlier, then layer in stax-lite taxes like Sphere effects and more free counterspells (Force of Negation, Pact of Negation) to protect it. Lean harder into a defined wincon—Laboratory Maniac/Thassa's Oracle combos or big X-spell finishers—so your overflowing hand actually closes games instead of just generating value.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Beat down with the 7/7 body after a board wipe like Cyclonic Rift
- ▸Slam an X-spell or storm payoff like Stroke of Genius or Blue Sun's Zenith fueled by your huge hand
- ▸Grind opponents out of resources until your card advantage is insurmountable
- ▸Assemble a tutor-found combo such as Laboratory Maniac with an empty library
Archetypes
- Control — Endless cards and built-in resilience let you counter, remove, and outvalue the table into the late game.
- Spellslinger — No max hand size plus draw rewards a dense noncreature-spell shell of counters, draw, and finishers.
- Big Mana / Ramp — Mono-blue ramp into Nezahal fuels expensive payoffs and overloaded sweepers.
