Ebondeath, Dracolich
The Commander
Flying
Ebondeath enters tapped.
You may cast this card from your graveyard if a creature not named Ebondeath, Dracolich died this turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Ebondeath is a resilient mono-black evasive beatstick that you keep recasting from the graveyard for four mana every time another creature dies that turn. Pair it with cheap death triggers, sacrifice outlets, and equipment/auras so the recurring Dragon either chips in flying damage or fuels an aristocrats engine that never runs out of a commander. Win by suiting it up as voltron or by grinding the table with repeated death payoffs.
Strengths
- Nearly impossible to keep down—dies and comes right back as long as anything else died that turn
- Flash plus flying makes it a surprise blocker and reliable evasive attacker
- Mono-black gives access to deep tutors, recursion, and ramp consistency
- Sidesteps commander tax by being recast from the graveyard, not the command zone
Weaknesses
- Enters tapped, so it can't attack or block the turn it arrives
- Needs a creature to have died this turn or it's stuck (exile and 'enters' hate shut it off)
- Exile-based removal (Swords, Path effects, Anguished Unmaking) permanently answers it
- Mono-black struggles with enchantments, flyers, and lacks card-advantage breadth outside black staples
- Single-color decks have limited interaction and can stall against go-wide boards
Key Cards
- Viscera Seer — Free sacrifice outlet that guarantees a creature died this turn so you can always recast Ebondeath.
- Blood Artist — Turns every death—including your repeatedly dying commander—into incremental drain and a win condition.
- Phyrexian Altar — Sac outlet plus mana that enables a death and helps refund the four mana to bring Ebondeath back.
- Skullclamp — Premier card draw engine in aristocrats and the best way to manufacture the deaths Ebondeath needs.
- Whip of Erebos — Lifelink on your recursive Dragon plus extra reanimation makes the beatdown plan far safer.
- Grave Pact — Forces opponents to sacrifice whenever your creatures die, weaponizing your endless death loop.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble your aristocrats engine faster. Lean into free sac outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Ashnod's Altar) plus multiple drain payoffs to build redundant loops, and include reusable removal like Bojuka Bog and Bloodchief Ascension. To push higher, run combo finishers such as Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Blood Artist for infinite drain.

Win Conditions
- ▸Repeated Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat drain triggered by looping deaths
- ▸Voltron commander damage with equipment like Skullclamp targets, Whip, and evasion
- ▸Beating down with a hard-to-remove flying 5/3 across multiple turns
- ▸Grinding the board to nothing with Grave Pact/Dictate of Erebos while you keep your creature
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Ebondeath's death-trigger requirement synergizes perfectly with sac outlets and drain payoffs.
- Voltron — A recurring evasive body that opponents can't permanently remove is ideal for equipment and auras.
- Reanimator — Mono-black's graveyard recursion supports a value-engine shell that loves a self-recurring commander.
- Stax/Attrition — Sacrifice-matters effects like Grave Pact grind opponents out while you rebuy your commander indefinitely.
