Elesh Norn // The Argent Etchings
The Commander
Whenever a source an opponent controls deals damage to you or a permanent you control, that source's controller loses 2 life unless they pay .
, Sacrifice three other creatures: Exile Elesh Norn, then return it to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control. Activate only as a sorcery.
(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter.)
I — Incubate 2 five times, then transform all Incubator tokens you control.
II — Creatures you control get +1/+1 and gain double strike until end of turn.
III — Destroy all other permanents except for artifacts, lands, and Phyrexians. Exile this Saga, then return it to the battlefield (front face up).
Guide
Gameplan
This mono-white Elesh Norn punishes opponents for attacking or pinging you, then converts your board into a recurring sacrifice engine. Flip her into the Argent Etchings to flood the board with Phyrexian Incubators, swing with double strike, and finally wrath everything that isn't an artifact, land, or Phyrexian—leaving your army intact to close the game.
Strengths
- Powerful built-in board wipe (Chapter III) that spares your own Phyrexians and artifacts
- Strong combat damage tax discourages opponents from attacking or using damage-based removal
- Token generation from Incubate plus double strike alpha strikes from the Saga side
- Mono-white consistency with access to the format's best stax and recursion pieces
- Self-recurring: the Saga returns Elesh Norn so you can repeat the loop
Weaknesses
- Flipping requires sacrificing three creatures, demanding a steady token or fodder supply
- Mono-white struggles with card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
- The flip is sorcery-speed and telegraphed, giving opponents time to respond
- Vulnerable to exile-based and non-damage removal that ignores her tax
- Slow to set up the full Saga payoff against fast combo decks
Key Cards
- Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines — Doubles your Incubate triggers and shuts off opponents' ETB effects, a brutal stax piece alongside the Praetor.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles every Incubator and creature token you make, supercharging both the sacrifice fuel and the final swing.
- Skullclamp — Turns the endless stream of cheap tokens into a relentless card-draw engine to refill after sacrificing.
- Smothering Tithe — Mono-white's premier ramp and treasure engine to power the
flip and stack effects.
- Cathars' Crusade — Snowballs your token-heavy board into enormous threats that survive and win after the wrath.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ramp like Sol Ring, Mana Vault, and Smothering Tithe to flip earlier, plus token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak) to multiply both fodder and threats. Lean into stax with Thalia, Static Orb, and Archon of Emeria to buy time, and include reliable sac outlets and recursion (Phyrexian Reclamation, Sun Titan) so you never run out of creatures to feed the flip.

Win Conditions
- ▸Alpha strike with double strike from Saga Chapter II across a wide token board
- ▸Drain opponents via the damage tax combined with forced-damage and aristocrat effects
- ▸Lock the board with stax and the recurring Chapter III wrath, then win at leisure
- ▸Overrun with anthem-buffed Phyrexian tokens that survive your own board wipes
Archetypes
- Tokens — Incubate and white's token makers produce both sacrifice fodder and a wide board for the double-strike swing.
- Stax — The damage tax plus white's tax effects and Elesh Norn Mother of Machines lock opponents out of attacking and ETBs.
- Aristocrats — The flip demands constant creature sacrifice, pairing naturally with sac payoffs and recursion.
- Control — Chapter III is a repeatable asymmetric board wipe that lets you grind opponents down while keeping your board.
