Esior, Wardwing Familiar
The Commander
Flying
Spells your opponents cast that target one or more commanders you control cost more to cast.
Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)
Guide
Gameplan
Esior is a cheap evasive partner that shields your commanders from removal by taxing opponent spells that target them. Pair it with an aggressive or value partner, suit up a threat with auras/equipment, and ride a hard-to-interact-with creature to victory while blue holds open counterspells and card draw. You play a tempo-control game, protecting your key creature and grinding out the table.
Strengths
- Only 2 mana and flies, so it deploys early and chips in evasive damage
- Effectively raises the cost of targeted removal/bounce on your commanders, protecting Voltron investments
- Partner gives deckbuilding flexibility and a second commander to pivot around
- Mono-blue access to counterspells, card draw, and protective spells reinforces its defensive plan
Weaknesses
- Tax only applies to spells that target your commanders — board wipes, edicts, and untargeted removal ignore it
- Esior itself is fragile and a magnet for the first removal spell
- Mono-blue (without partner) lacks reliable creature removal and ramp
- Doesn't generate card advantage or pressure on its own, leaning on the partner and equipment to win
- Tax is small (+3) against high-powered tables with cheap interaction
Key Cards
- Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof plus haste stacks with Esior's tax to make your commander nearly untouchable by targeted spells.
- Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh — A free 0-cost partner that becomes a frightening Voltron threat protected by Esior's tax.
- Cryptic Command — Flexible blue interaction that protects your board and answers threats while you grind value.
- Whispersilk Cloak — Unblockable plus shroud turns a buffed partner into an unstoppable, untargetable clock.
- Rhystic Study — Premier blue card advantage to keep refueling counterspells and protection.
Upgrade Path
Choose a partner that defines a focused win plan — an aggressive Voltron body like Rograkh, or a value/combo enabler — then build the protection suite around it with hexproof equipment and cheap counterspells. Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crystals, Mox Amber) and premium card draw to consistently deploy and defend your threat. Lean into mono-blue's untargetable enablers (Steel of the Godhead, Aqueous Form, Whispersilk Cloak) so the commander tax becomes redundant insurance rather than your only defense.

Win Conditions

- ▸Pairing with a partner that enables a dedicated combo or alternate kill
Archetypes
- Voltron — Esior's targeted-spell tax protects an equipped or enchanted commander from removal as it swings for lethal.
- Control — Mono-blue counterspells and card draw let Esior decks hold the table back while a protected threat closes.
- Tempo Aggro — Cheap flyers and an evasive partner apply early pressure that opponents struggle to interact with profitably.
- Partner Toolbox — Pairing with any partner lets you tailor colors and a win plan while Esior supplies protection.
