Ghoulcaller Gisa
The Commander
,
, Sacrifice another creature: Create X 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens, where X is the sacrificed creature's power.
Guide
Gameplan
Ghoulcaller Gisa turns one big creature into a horde of 2/2 Zombies, then loops those bodies through sacrifice and reanimation engines for incremental value and explosive board states. Early turns ramp and develop a sac fodder base, midgame you activate Gisa on a high-power creature to flood the board, and you close by draining or alpha-striking with a wide, recursive army. It's a mono-black aristocrats/tokens deck that grinds opponents out through attrition.
Strengths
- Generates massive token volume from a single high-power creature, snowballing board presence fast
- Mono-black gives access to elite tutors, recursion, and removal for consistency
- Excellent synergy with sacrifice payoffs, death triggers, and reanimation loops
- Resilient to board wipes since it can rebuild from the graveyard and reactivate Gisa
Weaknesses
- Gisa is slow: needs mana, a tap, and a creature to sacrifice each turn, and is easy to remove
- Mono-black struggles with enchantments and lacks interaction with the stack
- Token strategies fold to repeatable board wipes and graveyard hate
- Can be mana-hungry and clunky without good ramp and sac fodder online
Key Cards
- Pitiless Plunderer — Each sacrificed creature makes Treasure, fueling repeated Gisa activations and explosive turns.
- Gravecrawler — Recurs from the graveyard to provide endless cheap sacrifice fodder for Gisa.
- Blood Artist — Turns the deck's constant sacrifices and deaths into incremental life drain that wins games.
- Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet plus mana that enables Gisa loops and combo turns.
- Grave Pact — Punishes opponents every time you sacrifice, clearing their boards as you build yours.
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Gives undying to your non-Human creatures, enabling infinite sacrifice combos with a free outlet.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ritual effects (Sol Ring, Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod's Altar) so Gisa can activate multiple times per turn and assemble loops. Lean into combo finishers like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed with undying creatures plus Blood Artist, and tighten the curve with efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to find your engine pieces. Protect Gisa and your board with cards like Swiftfoot Boots and reactive removal, and round out the manabase with utility lands such as Cabal Coffers and Nykthos for explosive black mana.
