Gwaihir, Greatest of the Eagles
The Commander
Flying
Whenever Gwaihir attacks, target attacking creature gains flying until end of turn.
At the beginning of each end step, if you gained 3 or more life this turn, create a 3/3 white Bird creature token with flying and "Whenever this token attacks, target attacking creature gains flying until end of turn."
Guide
Gameplan
Gwaihir is a mono-white go-wide flyers and lifegain payoff that builds an evasive air force, then closes games through unblockable damage in the sky. Each turn you trigger 3+ lifegain to spawn 3/3 flying Birds, while Gwaihir hands flying to ground creatures so your whole board attacks unimpeded. Lean on token swarms plus anthems and you eventually fly over everyone for lethal.
Strengths
- Mono-white consistency and access to the best white token, anthem, and recursion staples
- Free 3/3 fliers every turn once you hit modest lifegain thresholds
- Evasion-granting attack trigger lets even big ground creatures connect
- Strong incidental lifegain synergy with the format's deep mono-white lifegain pool
Weaknesses
- Mono-white struggles with card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
- Heavily reliant on the commander and tokens; vulnerable to board wipes
- Lifegain payoff is grindy and can be slow against fast combo decks
- Little interaction beyond white's removal and taxes
Key Cards
- Soul Warden — Cheap repeatable lifegain that reliably trips Gwaihir's 3-life end-step threshold.
- Soul's Attendant — Another per-creature lifegain trigger that, stacked with others, hits 3+ life easily each turn.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles the Bird tokens Gwaihir creates, snowballing your air force.
- Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Adds extra life on every lifegain trigger and pumps your fliers as a lifegain payoff.
- Sword of Light and Shadow — Lifegain on combat damage feeds the threshold while protecting and recurring threats.
- Smothering Tithe — Mono-white's premier ramp and card engine to keep the air force flowing.
Upgrade Path
Tighten your lifegain density (Soul Warden effects, Sword of Light and Shadow, Heliod) so you reliably hit 3+ life every turn, then add token doublers like Anointed Procession and Mondrak. Improve mono-white's weak spots with ramp and draw such as Smothering Tithe, Welcoming Vampire, and Skullclamp, plus protection like Teferi's Protection and Flawless Maneuver to survive wipes.
