Halvar, God of Battle // Sword of the Realms
The Commander
Creatures you control that are enchanted or equipped have double strike.
At the beginning of each combat, you may attach target Aura or Equipment attached to a creature you control to target creature you control.
Equipped creature gets +2/+0 and has vigilance.
Whenever equipped creature dies, return it to its owner's hand.

Gameplan
Halvar is a mono-white Voltron commander: suit up one creature (often Halvar himself or another evasive threat) with Auras and Equipment to grant double strike, then swing for lethal commander damage. Each combat you freely move your buffs onto the best attacker, and Sword of the Realms protects equipped creatures by bouncing them to hand when they die. You ramp into a few key pieces of equipment, then close fast before opponents stabilize.
Strengths
- Double strike on enchanted/equipped creatures doubles all your combat buffs and on-hit triggers
- Free combat-step reattachment lets you redirect Auras/Equipment to dodge removal or chase the best target
- Sword of the Realms turns 'dies' into a bounce, blanking spot removal on your equipped creature
- Mono-white means consistent mana and access to strong protection and equipment tutors
Weaknesses
- Classic single-threat Voltron vulnerability: edicts, exile, and -X/-X bypass the bounce protection
- Mono-white struggles with raw card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
- Board wipes and fogs can stall the all-in combat plan
- Slow to set up if you draw equipment without creatures or vice versa
Key Cards
- Sword of the Realms — Halvar's back half gives vigilance, +2/+0, and a death-to-hand bounce that makes your carrier nearly impossible to kill with targeted removal.
- Colossus Hammer — Cheap +10/+10 that, paired with double strike and a way to attach it, ends games immediately.
- Sigarda's Aid — Lets you flash in Equipment and attach for free, enabling instant-speed Voltron blowouts.
- Puresteel Paladin — Draws cards off equipment and provides free equip with metalcraft, fueling the whole engine.
- Steelshaper's Gift — One-mana tutor to find Sword of the Realms, Colossus Hammer, or whatever equipment you need.
- Stoneforge Mystic — Tutors and cheats equipment into play, accelerating your clock dramatically.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient ramp and equipment tutors (Open the Armory, Stonehewer Giant) plus the Sword of X and Y cycle for protection and evasion, and prioritize evasion enablers like Whispersilk Cloak or Rogue's Passage to guarantee commander-damage hits. Lean into free-equip and flash effects (Sigarda's Aid, Puresteel Paladin, Leonin Shikari) to attack at instant speed, and run protection like Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention, and Teferi's Protection to beat removal and wraths. Trim slow auras for resilient equipment so Sword of the Realms' bounce keeps your threats safe.

Win Conditions
- ▸Commander damage from a double-striking, heavily equipped carrier
- ▸On-hit equipment triggers (Sword of Fire and Ice, Embercleave-style buffs) accumulating value and life loss
- ▸Going wide-ish with a couple of suited threats and swinging past blockers with evasion equipment
Archetypes
- Voltron — Halvar grants double strike and free buff-reattachment, making a single enchanted/equipped creature a one-shot threat.
- Equipment Aggro — His back half is an Equipment and he natively rewards stacking gear with double strike and protective bounces.
- Auras / Enchantress — Double strike applies to enchanted creatures too, so cheap Auras like Ethereal Armor scale explosively.
