Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Jan Jansen turns artifacts into a resource engine: sac noncreature artifacts for Constructs, then sac those Constructs for Treasure, fueling explosive turns of spells and recursion. You flood the board with cheap artifacts, loop them through Jan's two abilities, and convert that value into damage, drains, or a combo finish. The deck plays a grindy aristocrats/artifact midgame and snowballs once Jan untaps each turn.
Strengths
- Self-contained engine—Jan needs no support to generate value and has haste to start immediately
- Excellent synergy with sacrifice payoffs, artifact recursion, and Treasure matters
- Mardu colors give access to the best removal, tutors, and aristocrats payoffs
- Treasure generation enables explosive, color-fixed ramp turns
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander-dependent; without Jan the deck stalls and he draws removal
- Abilities are one-per-turn and tapped, so it's slow without untap effects or sac outlets
- Vulnerable to artifact sweepers and graveyard hate that shut off loops
- Needs a critical mass of cheap artifacts to keep the engine fed
Key Cards
- Nim Deathmantle — With a sac outlet and Treasure income, it loops creatures back to recur Jan's fodder and triggers.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice and mana lets you bypass Jan's tap limitation and combo with reanimation loops.
- Disciple of the Vault — Turns every artifact dying—Constructs, Treasures, anything—into incremental life loss for a win.
- Marionette Master — Each sacrificed artifact drains opponents, converting Jan's tokens into a lethal aristocrats finish.
- Goblin Engineer — Tutors key artifacts to the yard and battlefield to fuel and recur the engine.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Generates extra Treasure whenever creatures die, supercharging Jan's sacrifice loops.
Upgrade Path
Add free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar) and reanimation glue (Nim Deathmantle) to break Jan's once-per-turn limit into true loops. Lean into cheap artifacts and death payoffs (Disciple of the Vault, Mayhem Devil, Reckless Fireweaver) plus tutors like Goblin Engineer and Inventors' Fair to assemble combos consistently. Finally, prioritize fast mana and protection (Lightning Greaves, swift recasting) since the deck collapses without its commander online.
