Queen Marchesa
The Commander
Deathtouch, haste
When Queen Marchesa enters, you become the monarch.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if an opponent is the monarch, create a 1/1 black Assassin creature token with deathtouch and haste.
Guide
Gameplan
Queen Marchesa wants to become the monarch and never give it back, drawing an extra card each turn end while punishing opponents who steal the crown by minting deathtouch Assassins. You play a Mardu midrange/control shell that protects the monarchy, grinds value, and eventually wins through accumulated card advantage or an Assassin-based combo. Defend the crown, out-resource the table, then close.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage engine via the monarchy that snowballs in long games
- Deathtouch Assassin tokens deter attacks and feed sacrifice/aristocrat synergies
- Mardu colors give the best removal, board wipes, and disruption in the format
- Haste and deathtouch make her a relevant attacker and blocker the moment she lands
- Pillowfort and politics let you steer aggression away from yourself
Weaknesses
- Losing the monarchy to a single combat hit or theft can swing card advantage to opponents
- Three-color manabase can be greedy and demands good fixing
- No inherent fast win; can durdle and get out-paced by dedicated combo decks
- Vulnerable while you're not the monarch — the Assassin trigger does nothing if you hold the crown
- Removal-heavy metas can repeatedly kill her, though tax stays low at four mana
Key Cards
- Marisi, Breaker of the Coil — Forces opponents to attack each other and can hand you the monarchy through combat, weaponizing the crown.
- Assassin's Trophy — Flexible premium removal that protects you and your monarchy in three colors.
- Smothering Tithe — Turns opponents' draws into Treasure, ramping your control shell and powering big turns.
- Court of Grace — Doubles down on the monarch theme, generating flyers or card draw while you hold the crown.
- Skullclamp — Turns each expendable 1/1 Assassin into two cards, converting the monarch trigger into a draw engine.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Pairs with Assassin tokens and sacrifice effects to flood ramp and combo mana.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the manabase with fetches, duals, and fast mana (Mana Crypt, Arcane Signet) so the three colors come online consistently. Add a compact win like a sacrifice-token combo or Aetherflux Reservoir, plus more crown protection (Ghostly Prison, Propaganda, instant-speed removal) so you keep the monarchy uninterrupted. Lean into Skullclamp and aristocrat payoffs to convert tokens into both cards and lethal drain.

Archetypes
- Control — Mardu removal, wraths, and the monarchy's card advantage let you grind opponents out.
- Pillowfort/Politics — Deathtouch deterrents and crown manipulation let you redirect aggression and bargain at the table.
- Aristocrats — A steady stream of Assassin tokens fuels sacrifice payoffs and drain engines.
