Kokusho, the Evening Star
The Commander
Flying
When Kokusho dies, each opponent loses 5 life. You gain life equal to the life lost this way.
Guide
Gameplan
Kokusho is a mono-black value engine: a 5/5 flier that drains each opponent for 5 and refills you whenever it dies. The deck loops Kokusho with sacrifice outlets, reanimation, and blink to repeatedly trigger its death drain, grinding opponents out while staying ahead on life. Ramp into it early, protect it, then sacrifice and recur it until tables are dead.
Strengths
- Death trigger scales with opponent count, draining 15+ life in a four-player game per loop
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, reanimation, and ritual mana
- Built-in lifegain keeps you safe from aggro while you assemble loops
- Cheap to recur and abuse with sacrifice/reanimation packages
- Resilient win condition that doesn't require attacking through blockers
Weaknesses
- Single color limits removal flexibility and access to counterspells/artifact-enchantment hate
- Relies on graveyard recursion, so graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) hits hard
- Exile-based removal permanently answers Kokusho
- Sacrifice loops can be slow without the right outlets in hand
- Lifegain doesn't stop commander damage or mill-based plans
Key Cards
- Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that also makes mana, enabling repeated Kokusho deaths in a loop.
- Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices Kokusho for mana that can fuel its own recursion.
- Reanimate — Cheap reanimation to bring Kokusho back after each drain.
- Animate Dead — Recurs Kokusho for two mana and can be looped with blink or destruction effects.
- Victimize — Sacrifices a token to return Kokusho twice, doubling drains per cast.
- Demonic Tutor — Finds your sacrifice outlet or reanimation piece to start the loop.
- Gray Merchant of Asphodel — Devotion-fueled second drain that closes games alongside Kokusho triggers.
- Cabal Coffers — Powers the big mana needed to recast and reanimate Kokusho repeatedly.
Upgrade Path
Add free loop engines like Phyrexian Altar plus a recursion enabler such as Nim Deathmantle or a Geralf's Messenger-style payoff to assemble infinite drains. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus) and more tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to find combo pieces faster. Round out with cheap interaction (Imp's Mischief, Dauthi Voidwalker) and exile-proof recursion to dodge graveyard hate.
