Linvala, Keeper of Silence
The Commander
Flying
Activated abilities of creatures your opponents control can't be activated.
Guide
Gameplan
Linvala is a mono-white hatebears/stax commander that shuts off all opponents' creature activated abilities the moment she hits the battlefield, neutering mana dorks, sacrifice outlets, and creature-based combos. You play efficient white disruption, taxes, and resource denial early, then grind out the game with flyers and equipment beats while opponents struggle under your prison. Win slowly and methodically, leaning on superior board presence and lockpieces.
Strengths
- Devastating against creature-combo, mana-dork, and aristocrats decks—she single-handedly turns off their engine
- Mono-white gives access to the format's best stax and tax pieces plus efficient hatebears
- A 3/4 flyer is a real clock and blocks well, so she isn't a do-nothing lockpiece
- Cheap to recast and protect, enabling repeated value and disruption
Weaknesses
- Color-screwed on ramp, card draw, and interaction relative to multicolor decks
- Doesn't slow noncreature combos, burn, or commander-damage Voltron at all
- High-value target—dies to nearly any removal and the lock collapses with her
- Mono-white struggles to close games quickly and can stall out
Key Cards
- Smothering Tithe — The best mono-white ramp/card-advantage engine to power your stax shell.
- Drannith Magistrate — Stacks with Linvala to attack opponents' commanders and engines from another angle.
- Swords to Plowshares — Premier white removal to clear the blocker or threat standing between you and victory.
- Thalia, Heretic Cathar — Taxing hatebear that slows opponents' tempo to match your prison plan.
- Karmic Justice — Punishes opponents for removing your noncreature lockpieces, protecting the prison.
- Archon of Emeria — One-spell-per-turn lock plus tapping lands compounds Linvala's grind.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt) and the best white tutors like Enlightened Tutor and Steelshaper's Gift to find Linvala or key lockpieces consistently. Layer in stronger stax (Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Aven Mindcensor, Cursed Totem effects) plus protection like Mother of Runes and Flawless Maneuver to keep her sticky. Finally, adopt a tighter wincon—Voltron equipment package or Approach of the Second Sun—so the prison actually converts to a kill.

Win Conditions
- ▸Equipment/anthem-buffed Linvala and other flyers beating down over time
- ▸Locking the table with stax pieces until opponents can't function, then grinding out
- ▸An assembled mono-white wincon like Approach of the Second Sun or Felidar Sovereign
- ▸Pillow-fort into a token swarm or a finisher like Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines
Archetypes
- Stax / Prison — Linvala disables creature abilities while you layer taxes and resource denial to lock the table.
- Hatebears — Mono-white floods the board with disruptive bodies that pair with Linvala's static ability.
- Voltron — With opponents' creatures defanged, suit Linvala up with equipment for evasive damage.
- Control — Use white removal and taxes to police the board and win the long game.
