Mikaeus, the Lunarch
The Commander
Mikaeus enters with X +1/+1 counters on it.
: Put a +1/+1 counter on Mikaeus.
, Remove a +1/+1 counter from Mikaeus: Put a +1/+1 counter on each other creature you control.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast Mikaeus early (often for cheap with little X) and use his tap ability to grow him, then sacrifice his counters to pump your whole board at instant speed. Flood the battlefield with tokens and small creatures, then swing for lethal after a single activation turns your army into a wall of buffed attackers. He's a one-mana white commander, so you build a wide, resilient go-wide deck around counters and anthems.
Strengths
- Extremely cheap commander (1 mana plus X) that comes online immediately
- Mass +1/+1 counter distribution synergizes with counter and token themes
- Mono-white gives access to the best go-wide anthems, protection, and recursion
- Instant-speed board pump can blow out combat and force bad blocks
- Counters stay permanent, so the boost survives wraths better than temporary anthems
Weaknesses
- Tapping to use abilities makes him vulnerable and slow without haste or proliferate
- Mono-white struggles with raw card advantage and ramp
- Board wipes can erase your tokens despite the counters
- His pump requires removing counters, shrinking him and limiting repeat use
- Single removal spell on Mikaeus stalls the engine each turn
Key Cards
- Cathars' Crusade — Every creature you cast adds counters everywhere, snowballing alongside Mikaeus's distribution.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles your token output so Mikaeus's anthem effect hits a far wider board.
- Intangible Virtue — Cheap go-wide anthem that stacks with counters to make tokens lethal fast.
- Skullclamp — Mono-white's premier card engine, turning small or counter-bearing tokens into a stream of cards.
- Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Adds counters when you gain life and synergizes with the counter theme for explosive boards.
- Felidar Retreat — Generates tokens or board-wide counters every landfall, doubling down on the go-wide plan.
Upgrade Path
Add proliferate and counter doublers (Doubling Season, Inspiring Call) and ways to give Mikaeus haste or untap him to use his ability the turn he lands. Improve mono-white's weak spots with ramp (Smothering Tithe, Mana Vault) and card draw (Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek), and include protection like Heroic Intervention's white analog Flawless Maneuver and Teferi's Protection to survive wraths. Tighten the curve toward cheap token producers so a single Mikaeus activation immediately threatens lethal.
Core Cards

Win Conditions
- ▸Alpha strike with a wide board pumped by Mikaeus and anthems
- ▸Convoke/overrun finishers like Triumph of the Hordes or Craterhoof-style effects in white go-wide shells
- ▸Grind incremental counters and chip damage while protected by white interaction
Archetypes
- Tokens — Mikaeus's board-wide pump rewards flooding the field with creatures to maximize counter distribution.
- +1/+1 Counters — His abilities revolve around generating and spreading counters, slotting into proliferate and counter-matters shells.
- Go-Wide Aggro — Cheap commander plus anthems turns a wide army into a fast white beatdown.
- Voltron — He can stack all his counters onto himself with the tap ability for a surprisingly large lone threat.
