Sefris of the Hidden Ways
The Commander
Whenever one or more creature cards are put into your graveyard from anywhere, venture into the dungeon. This ability triggers only once each turn. (To venture into the dungeon, enter the first room or advance to the next room.)
Create Undead — Whenever you complete a dungeon, return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.
Guide
Gameplan
Sefris turns self-mill and creature death into free dungeon ventures, churning through Undercity or other dungeons to draw cards, make tokens, and ramp while filling the yard. Completing a dungeon reanimates your biggest creature for free, and the loop repeats every turn as you fuel the graveyard with mill, fetches, and sacrifice. You grind the game out and eventually drop a haymaker (Massacre Girl, a big reanimation target) or assemble a reanimator combo.
Strengths
- Venture every turn from any creature hitting the yard, even via mill or fetch lands, making the trigger trivially easy to enable
- Free, repeatable reanimation on completing a dungeon, no mana required
- Esper colors give the best card draw, removal, tutors, and graveyard support in the format
- Naturally synergizes with self-mill, sacrifice, and recursion shells
Weaknesses
- Heavy reliance on the graveyard makes it fold to Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog, and other graveyard hate
- Venture only triggers once per turn, so it can be grindy and slow to actually complete a dungeon
- Sefris does little the turn she lands and is a removal magnet that invites attention
- No built-in evasion or protection; needs the deck to provide a closing punch
Key Cards
- Undercity — The premier venture dungeon; its final room draws cards and makes a treasure while completing reanimation.
- Persistent Petitioners — Repeatable self-mill dumps creature cards to trigger venture and fill reanimation targets.
- Massacre Girl — A devastating reanimation target that can wrath the board and refill your graveyard at once.
- Dread Return — Cheap, flashback-capable reanimation that pairs with the creatures Sefris dumps into the yard.
- Altar of Dementia — Sacrifice outlet plus mill engine that both feeds the yard and enables combo finishes.
- Gravecrawler — Recursive creature death repeatedly fuels venture triggers turn after turn.
Upgrade Path
Add fast graveyard enablers and self-mill (Stitcher's Supplier, Hermit Druid, Buried Alive) so you venture and stock targets immediately, plus more sac outlets like Viscera Seer to guarantee a daily trigger. Upgrade the reanimation suite with Reanimate, Animate Dead, and Victimize, and include big payoffs (Razaketh, Sheoldred) to convert recursion into wins. Round out with protection and graveyard-hate answers (Bojuka Bog redundancy, Soul-Guide Lantern) plus efficient Esper interaction to survive the grind.
