Thalia, Heretic Cathar
The Commander
First strike
Creatures and nonbasic lands your opponents control enter tapped.
Guide
Gameplan
Deploy Thalia early to tax every opponent's tempo—their creatures and nonbasic lands enter tapped, slowing blocks, mana, and removal a full turn. Build a fast white aggro or hatebears board behind her, layer in Stax pieces that punish tapped-out boards, and close with a wide swarm or a Voltron beatdown while opponents struggle to keep up.
Strengths
- Mono-white consistency and access to the deepest pool of cheap hatebears and Stax effects
- Thalia's tap effect cripples mana ramp and ambush blockers, enabling aggressive attacks
- Cheap commander with first strike that pressures life totals immediately
- Excellent in fast metas where slowing opponents a turn is backbreaking
Weaknesses
- Mono-white lacks card draw and ramp, leading to topdeck wars
- No built-in evasion or protection—Thalia dies to any removal and is a magnet for it
- Limited reach; struggles to close out games against big lifegain or fogs
- Symmetric-ish hate can be outscaled by ramp-heavy or combo decks that ignore tapped lands
Key Cards
- Smothering Tithe — Solves white's mana problem and turns every opponent's draw into ramp for your aggressive plan.
- Mangara, the Diplomat — Provides repeatable card draw whenever opponents attack or cast multiple spells, fixing white's biggest flaw.
- Skullclamp — Premier card advantage engine that refuels a token-heavy white aggro board.
- Esper Sentinel — Another hatebear that draws cards and taxes noncreature spells while you keep applying pressure.
- Winter Orb — Pairs viciously with Thalia—opponents' lands already enter tapped, so they can never untap and recover.
- Sword of Fire and Ice — Adds evasion, protection, card draw, and damage to make Thalia a real threat or buff a teammate.
Upgrade Path
Add the best mono-white staples—Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, Skullclamp, and Land Tax—to overcome the color's card and mana shortfalls. Lean harder into Stax (Winter Orb, Static Orb, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Archon of Emeria) so your tempo tax becomes a true lock, and add fast mana like Sol Ring and Mana Crypt plus Cathars' Crusade or Anointed Procession to scale your aggression into a fast kill.

Win Conditions
- ▸Going wide with cheap creatures and finishing via an anthem or overrun effect like Coat of Arms
- ▸Voltron damage with equipment such as Sword of Fire and Ice or Embercleave-style buffs (Colossus Hammer)
- ▸Grinding opponents out under Stax locks while chipping in with first-strike attackers
Archetypes
- Hatebears — Thalia headlines a swarm of disruptive white creatures that tax mana, spells, and combat while beating down.
- Stax — Her tap effect compounds with Winter Orb, Static Orb, and tax pieces to lock opponents out of their turns.
- Aggro / Weenie — First strike and the tempo tax let a wide go-wide white board race the table before it stabilizes.
- Voltron — Equipment and white protection auras turn Thalia or another bear into a fast evasive clock.
