Mana value3EDHREC#3,717

The Commander

Other blue creatures you control have "Whenever this creature becomes tapped, draw a card, then discard a card."

Other artifact creatures you control get +1/+1.

{U/P}: Until end of turn, target creature you control becomes a blue artifact in addition to its other colors and types. Activate only as a sorcery. ({U/P} can be paid with either {U} or 2 life.)

Guide

Gameplan

Unctus turns your blue and artifact creatures into a looting engine: tap them (via attacking, vehicles, or tap-outlets) to draw and discard, then convert key creatures into blue artifacts to pile on the team-wide +1/+1 anthem. You grind card advantage, build a wide artifact-creature board, and close with combat, mill, or a big tap-payoff finisher.

Strengths

  • Steady card advantage and graveyard filling from every tap trigger, fueling reanimation and flashback payoffs
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, tutors, and protection in the format
  • Doubles as a tribal payoff for both blue creatures and artifact creatures, two of the deepest card pools
  • Cheap three-mana commander that immediately impacts the board and survives most spot removal due to low value

Weaknesses

  • Mono-blue struggles with permanent-based removal; you rely on bounce and counters rather than hard answers
  • Tap triggers only loot (draw then discard) for raw card quality, not pure advantage, unless paired with extra draw
  • Without untap or tap outlets, you can be too passive and durdle
  • Vulnerable to a board wipe wiping your accumulated artifact-creature engine, and to graveyard hate that undercuts your discards

Key Cards

  • Thousand-Year ElixirLets you tap creatures for value on demand and grants haste, accelerating the loot engine.
  • Intruder AlarmUntaps creatures on every creature ETB, turning tokens or flicker into repeatable looting and combo loops.
  • Kindred DiscoveryNaming Artifact or Vedalken turns every cast and attack into raw card draw alongside the loot triggers.
  • Sai, Master ThopteristFloods the board with artifact creatures that all get the +1/+1 buff and feed your draw engine.
  • Padeem, Consul of InnovationProtects your artifacts from removal and provides extra upkeep card draw in artifact-heavy builds.
  • Brudiclad, Telchor EngineerMass token generation and copies create a wide artifact-creature army that the anthem and tap triggers reward.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and tap-untap enablers (Sol Ring, mana rocks, Seedborn Muse, Aphetto Alchemist) to make the loot engine relentless, and tighten the curve with proactive counters and tutors. Lean into a focused combo finish—Intruder Alarm loops or an artifact engine—so the card filtering converts into a deterministic win rather than just value. Upgrade mana base with duals/fetches and add protection like Heroic Intervention's blue analogs (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves) to keep Unctus online.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • Beating down with a buffed, wide artifact-creature board
  • Looting into and reanimating a big finisher or assembling an artifact combo
  • Infinite untap/loot loops (e.g., Intruder Alarm plus token makers) to draw your deck and win via mill or a payoff
  • Mill or alternate wincons like Thassa's Oracle after drawing out your library

Archetypes

  • ArtifactsThe +1/+1 anthem and the ability to make any creature a blue artifact make Unctus a natural artifact-creature lord.
  • Spellslinger / ControlMono-blue lets you load up on counters and card draw while looting toward your best spells.
  • Reanimator / Self-MillThe discard half of every tap trigger feeds graveyard payoffs like flashback, unearth, and reanimation.
  • TokensWide boards of blue or artifact tokens convert tap triggers into massive card filtering and buffed attackers.
