Zellix, Sanity Flayer
The Commander
Hive Mind — Whenever a player mills one or more creature cards, you create a 1/1 black Horror creature token.
,
: Target player mills three cards.
Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)
Guide
Gameplan
Zellix turns self-mill (and opponent mill) into a token army: every time a creature card hits a graveyard from milling, you get a 1/1 Horror. You mill yourself with cheap value engines, flood the board with Horrors, then convert them into damage, sacrifice fodder, or combo fuel. Pick a Background to splash a second color and unlock payoffs Zellix alone can't reach.
Strengths
- Generates a wide board of tokens with no extra mana investment, just from milling creatures
- Pairs with a Background, so you can splash a second color for sacrifice/aristocrat/combo payoffs
- Self-mill fills the graveyard for reanimation and 'cards in graveyard' payoffs while making bodies
- Cheap commander (MV 3) that comes down early and immediately enables engines
- Token swarm enables both go-wide aggro and sacrifice loops
Weaknesses
- Mono-blue alone lacks token payoffs, sacrifice outlets, and removal—heavily Background-dependent
- Tokens are fragile 1/1s vulnerable to any board wipe
- Mill can accidentally bin your best creatures or deck you out without recursion
- Graveyard hate shuts down both reanimation plans and slows your engine
- Slow to close games without a dedicated finisher; the swarm is small per trigger
Key Cards
- Altar of Dementia — Sacrifices Horrors to mill yourself, which mills creatures to make more Horrors—an infinite loop with the right enablers.
- Sidisi, Brood Tyrant — Backup mill engine that also rewards creature mill, doubling down on Zellix's plan in Sultai.
- Mesmeric Orb — Repeatedly mills everyone, triggering Zellix constantly across the table.
- Hedron Crab — Cheap, repeatable self-mill on landfall that reliably bins creatures for tokens.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet turning Horrors into mana, fueling combo and reanimation lines.
- Tasha's Hideous Laughter — Massive single-shot mill that floods the board with Horrors from one cast.
Upgrade Path
Commit to a Background that gives you payoffs—Sophina/Disa or a black Background for aristocrats and removal—and build toward an infinite combo with Altar of Dementia plus a reanimation or recursion piece. Add efficient self-mill (Hedron Crab, Stitcher's Supplier, Mesmeric Orb), drain outlets (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat), and a token finisher like Pitiless Plunderer for mana loops. Round out with fast mana and graveyard recursion to protect against hate and ensure your engine never stalls.

Win Conditions
- ▸Aristocrats drain (Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat) sacrificing Horrors in loops
- ▸Infinite mill combos like Altar of Dementia + Zellix + sacrifice/reanimation to mill out the table
- ▸Go-wide alpha strike with the Horror swarm plus an anthem or overrun effect
- ▸Reanimating large threats off the self-mill to close the game
Archetypes
- Mill / Self-Mill Value — Zellix converts every milled creature into a body, turning the graveyard-filling theme into a board presence.
- Aristocrats — With a black Background, the endless 1/1 Horrors become perfect sacrifice fodder for drain effects.
- Reanimator — Self-mill loads the yard with bombs to reanimate while still building a token army.
- Tokens / Go-Wide — Repeatable token generation supports anthems and overrun-style finishers.
