Zenos yae Galvus // Shinryu, Transcendent Rival
The Commander
My First Friend — When Zenos yae Galvus enters, choose a creature an opponent controls. Until end of turn, creatures other than Zenos yae Galvus and the chosen creature get -2/-2.
When the chosen creature leaves the battlefield, transform Zenos yae Galvus.
Flying
As this creature transforms into Shinryu, choose an opponent.
Burning Chains — When the chosen player loses the game, you win the game.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast Zenos as a one-sided board sweeper, marking an opponent's creature and giving everything else -2/-2 to clear small boards while keeping Zenos alive. Kill or remove that chosen creature to flip into Shinryu, a 5-mana flyer, and lock onto a single opponent—then grind that player out with removal, drain, and attrition so their loss becomes your win. Play a mono-black control/midrange game built around recursion, card advantage, and inevitability.
Strengths
- Built-in one-sided wrath on a body that pressures aggressive token and weenie decks
- Alternate win condition: knocking out the chosen player simply wins you the game
- Easy to flip in mono-black, which is loaded with cheap removal and sacrifice effects to remove the chosen creature
- Recastable from the command zone, so the -2/-2 sweep is repeatable removal
- Flying clock on Shinryu plus mono-black's deep card-advantage and reanimation suite
Weaknesses
- The win clause only targets one chosen player—multiplayer pods can leave the other two opponents to beat you
- -2/-2 does little against go-tall or big-creature decks
- Color identity locks you out of counterspells and enchantment removal
- Relies on actually killing the chosen opponent, which can be slow and politically painful
- If Zenos dies before flipping you lose the alternate win and just have an expensive sweeper
Key Cards
- Bolas's Citadel — Mono-black card-advantage engine that pays life to bury opponents under spells while you grind toward the win.
- Phyrexian Reclamation — Recurs Zenos and key creatures to repeat the sweep and keep pressure on the chosen player.
- Liliana, Dread Queen — Edict effects help force the chosen creature off the battlefield to trigger Zenos's transform.
- Massacre Wurm — Doubles down on the -X/-X theme and converts opposing creature deaths into direct damage at the chosen player.
- Gray Merchant of Asphodel — Devotion drain in mono-black pushes damage straight at your targeted opponent to close the Shinryu game.
- Crypt Ghast — Doubles Swamp mana to power out Zenos, big finishers, and removal repeatedly.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Nirkana Revenant) to deploy Zenos early and reload after sweeps. Tighten the removal and edict package (Liliana, Dread Queen; Sheoldred, Whispering One; Bone Shards) so you reliably remove the chosen creature to flip on demand. For higher power, lean into focused drain and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Torment of Hailfire) to convert the Shinryu lock into a fast, deterministic kill on your targeted opponent.

Win Conditions
- ▸Flip into Shinryu, target an opponent, then kill that player with damage or drain to instantly win
- ▸Repeated drain effects like Gray Merchant and Bolas's Citadel life loss
- ▸Beating down with Shinryu's flying body plus reanimated fatties
- ▸Grinding the table out via attrition and recursion until you out-resource everyone
Archetypes
- Control — The -2/-2 sweep plus mono-black removal lets you stabilize and pick apart one opponent at a time.
- Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets and drain effects both flip Zenos by removing the chosen creature and grind the target player to zero.
- Midrange Attrition — Recursion, hand disruption, and value creatures let you out-grind the table while Shinryu provides a flying clock.
- Reanimator — Mono-black reanimation cheats out big threats and lets you rebuy Zenos and finishers for repeated value.
