Zul Ashur, Lich Lord
The Commander
Ward—Pay 2 life. (Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter it unless that player pays 2 life.)
: You may cast target Zombie creature card from your graveyard this turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Build a mono-black Zombie tribal engine that fills the graveyard, then uses Zul Ashur's tap ability to recur the best Zombies from your yard every turn. You grind value through repeated death and recursion while drowning opponents in Zombie tokens and ETB/death triggers, eventually overwhelming the board or going wide.
Strengths
- Recurs Zombies from the graveyard for free each turn, giving relentless card advantage and resilience to board wipes
- Cheap two-mana commander with Ward 2 life makes it hard and risky to remove
- Mono-black gives access to top-tier tutors, ramp, and removal
- Zombie tribe is deep, with strong payoffs, lords, and recursion synergies
Weaknesses
- Single color means no access to counterspells or blue card draw
- Tap ability only enables casting, not free reanimation, so you still pay the Zombie's mana cost
- Relies on the commander surviving and untapping to generate advantage
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate that empties your recursion fuel
Key Cards
- Gravecrawler — Recurs itself endlessly as a Zombie and pairs with sacrifice outlets for infinite loops.
- Diregraf Captain — Drains opponents whenever a Zombie dies, turning your recursion engine into a win condition.
- Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver — Generates Zombie tokens and card draw every time a Zombie dies, fueling the aristocrats plan.
- Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet plus mana that enables Gravecrawler loops and refuels recursion.
- Liliana, Untouched by Death — A Zombie-tribal planeswalker that mills, drains, and protects your engine.
- Cabal Coffers — Massive mono-black ramp to recast expensive Zombies repeatedly via the commander.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and tutors (Dark Ritual, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble Gravecrawler-based combos faster, and tighten the curve toward cheap, recursive Zombies that abuse the tap ability. Include graveyard-stocking enablers and protect your engine with Imp's Mischief or counter-magic stand-ins like Withering Boon, then finish with consistent drain payoffs rather than slow combat.
Core Cards

Win Conditions
- ▸Aristocrats drain via Diregraf Captain, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Blood Artist effects through repeated Zombie deaths
- ▸Going wide with Zombie tokens and lords like Lord of the Undead for a swarm attack
- ▸Infinite combos such as Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + a death-payoff for unbounded drain
Archetypes
- Zombie Tribal — The tap ability is built around recasting Zombie cards, rewarding a dedicated tribal shell.
- Aristocrats — Recurring cheap Zombies with sacrifice outlets and drain effects turns death triggers into damage.
- Reanimator — Mono-black recursion and graveyard-stocking pair with the commander's ability to keep value Zombies coming back.
