Alesha, Who Smiles at Death
The Commander
First strike
Whenever Alesha attacks, you may pay . If you do, return target creature card with power 2 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking.
Guide
Gameplan
Alesha is an aggressive reanimator engine: attack each turn, pay , and cheat powerful creatures with power 2 or less back into play tapped and attacking. You fill the graveyard via discard, looting, and self-mill, then loop value creatures and ETB/death triggers while pressuring opponents with combat. Many builds pivot from incremental advantage into a combo or wide aristocrats finish.
Strengths
- Cheats expensive ETB creatures into play for two mana every combat
- Mardu gives premium removal, reanimation, and sacrifice payoffs
- Recursive value loops make the deck grindy and resilient to wraths
- Aggressive early commander that pressures opponents starting turn 3-4
Weaknesses
- Reanimation is capped at power 2 or less, limiting fatties
- Relies on attacking, so the trigger fizzles if Alesha is blocked, removed, or stuck
- Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) hoses the engine
- Needs setup to fill the graveyard, can stumble without enablers
- No inherent card draw or ramp in the command zone
Key Cards
- Karmic Guide — Power 2 reanimates bigger creatures, and loops infinitely with a sac outlet and Reveillark.
- Reveillark — Recurs your power-2 creatures on death, building near-unbreakable value loops.
- Viscera Seer — Free sac outlet that enables combos and Reveillark/Karmic Guide loops.
- Solemn Simulacrum — Cheap to reanimate for ramp, card draw, and a death trigger you can recur.
- Buried Alive — Tutors three creatures straight to the graveyard to set up Alesha's reanimation.
- Faithless Looting — Cheaply fills the yard and digs while pitching reanimation targets.
- Anguished Unmaking — Flexible Mardu removal to clear blockers or threats so Alesha connects.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the curve toward cheap, high-impact power-2 creatures with ETB or death triggers and add free sac outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder) plus payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) to enable combo kills. Add fast mana and rituals (Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Jeska's Will) and efficient tutors (Buried Alive, Entomb, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble loops faster. Round out with protection like Swords to Plowshares, Teferi's Protection, and graveyard insurance to fight hate.
