Ezio Auditore da Firenze
The Commander
Menace
Assassin spells you cast have freerunning . (You may cast a spell for its freerunning cost if you dealt combat damage to a player this turn with an Assassin or commander.)
Whenever Ezio deals combat damage to a player, you may pay if that player has 10 or less life. When you do, that player loses the game.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast cheap evasive Ezio early, connect for combat damage to enable freerunning costs on Assassin spells and chip opponents toward the 10-life threshold. Once a player is at 10 or less, hit them with Ezio and pay WUBRG to make them lose the game outright. In the meantime, build an Assassin-tribal value engine while protecting your evasive commander.
Strengths
- Two-mana five-color commander that's cheap to recast and hard to keep down
- Built-in alternate win: any combat connect at 10 or less life kills a player regardless of board state
- Menace makes Ezio hard to block and keeps damage flowing to fuel freerunning
- Five-color identity opens the entire card pool for ramp, removal, and protection
Weaknesses
- WUBRG payment for the kill is mana-intensive and clunky to assemble
- Relies on connecting in combat, so flyers and aggressive blockers can stall the plan
- Assassin tribal is a shallow pool, so freerunning payoffs are limited without deckbuilding effort
- Five colors means a fragile, fixing-dependent mana base
- Removal-heavy tables can simply kill Ezio before you reach the threshold
Key Cards
- Anowon, the Ruin Thief — Top-tier Assassin payoff that mills and grows while supporting the tribal subtheme.
- Royal Assassin — An Assassin that pressures the board and benefits from freerunning discounts.
- Sword of Feast and Famine — Grants evasion and protection while untapping lands to help fund the WUBRG kill trigger.
- Rogue's Passage — Guarantees Ezio connects for the assassinate trigger through any blockers.
- Chromatic Lantern — Critical five-color fixing that makes the WUBRG payment reliably castable.
- Whispersilk Cloak — Unblockable plus shroud keeps Ezio alive and connecting every turn.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the mana base with fetches, duals, and Triomes plus rocks like Chromatic Lantern and Birds of Paradise so WUBRG is always available. Lean hard into unblockable enablers (Rogue's Passage, Whispersilk Cloak, Trailblazer's Boots) and life-loss effects (Bolas's Citadel, drain spells) to reach the 10-life threshold faster. Add protection like Swiftfoot Boots and counterspells to keep Ezio sticking so a single connect ends a player.
