The Ur-Dragon
The Commander
Eminence — As long as The Ur-Dragon is in the command zone or on the battlefield, other Dragon spells you cast cost less to cast.
Flying
Whenever one or more Dragons you control attack, draw that many cards, then you may put a permanent card from your hand onto the battlefield.
Guide
Gameplan
Assemble a horde of Dragons, cheat them out, and swing wide for huge evasive damage while drawing a fistful of cards and free-casting permanents off The Ur-Dragon's attack trigger. The Eminence discount makes every Dragon cheaper from turn one, so you ramp aggressively into beaters and overwhelm the table through the air or with a single explosive alpha strike.
Strengths
- Five-color identity gives access to the best ramp, removal, and Dragons in the format
- Eminence discount applies from the command zone even before casting The Ur-Dragon
- Attack trigger generates massive card advantage and free permanents, snowballing fast
- Dragons are individually powerful evasive threats that close games on their own
- Tons of synergistic tribal support (Dragonlords, Scion, Goldspan, etc.)
Weaknesses
- Commander costs nine mana and is a huge investment to recast
- Board wipes are devastating since the deck commits heavily to creatures
- Five-color manabase is expensive and prone to color screw without fixing
- Attack trigger only rewards you after combat, so it's slow against fast combo decks
- Can be grindy and durdly without enough ramp to power out threats
Key Cards
- Dragon Tempest — Gives all your Dragons haste and pings the table for flying damage, enabling immediate alpha strikes.
- Scourge of Valkas — Turns every Dragon entering or attacking into direct damage, often a one-card kill with a wide board.
- Crucible of Fire — A cheap anthem that pushes your Dragon team into lethal range across multiple opponents.
- Sarkhan, Fireblood — Ritual-style ramp and card draw built specifically for casting Dragons faster.
- Temur Ascendancy — Gives your Dragons haste and draws a card each time one enters, smoothing the curve.
- Utvara Hellkite — Creates a 6/6 Dragon for every attacking Dragon, snowballing into an unstoppable army.
- Dragonlord Dromoka — A resilient beater that can't be countered and shuts off opponents' instant-speed interaction during your turn.
Upgrade Path
Prioritize a smoother five-color manabase with fetches, shocks, Triomes, and fast mana like Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and signets so you reliably hit your high curve. Add cheat-into-play effects (Quicksilver Amulet, Dragonstorm, reanimation) and haste enablers so attacks happen the turn Dragons land, and lean into payoff finishers like Scourge of Valkas and Terror of the Peaks. Trim narrow, slow Dragons for efficient ramp, interaction, and protection like Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection to survive board wipes.
