Gev, Scaled Scorch
The Commander
Ward—Pay 2 life.
Other creatures you control enter with an additional +1/+1 counter on them for each opponent who lost life this turn.
Whenever you cast a Lizard spell, Gev deals 1 damage to target opponent.
Guide
Gameplan
Gev is an aggressive BR midrange/aristocrats deck that snowballs board presence through damage. Early turns you ping opponents with Lizard spells and cheap pressure to ensure 'opponent lost life this turn' is checked, so every subsequent creature lands with stacked +1/+1 counters. You then convert that oversized board into damage via attacks, ping triggers, and burn finishers.
Strengths
- Cheap, two-mana commander that rebuilds quickly and has Ward to dodge removal
- Snowballing counters make even mediocre creatures into real threats
- Lizard tribal pings double as repeatable reach and direct opponent damage
- Naturally aggressive in three-player pods where multiple opponents lose life
Weaknesses
- The counter ability requires opponents to lose life first, so it whiffs on empty boards or stalled turns
- Heavily reliant on the commander; without Gev the deck loses its payoff engine
- Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your invested counters
- Lizard typal support is thin, limiting how reliably you trigger the cast ability
Key Cards
- Goldspan Dragon — Treasure generation accelerates your Lizard spells and provides evasive beats (note: not a Lizard, but a strong payoff).
- Impact Tremors — Every creature entering pings each opponent, guaranteeing the 'lost life this turn' condition for counters.
- Witch's Cauldron — Helps grind value, but more importantly any early ping ensures your next creatures enter huge.
- Purphoros, God of the Forge — Turns each ETB into 2 damage to all opponents, both enabling counters and acting as a finisher.
- Krenko, Mob Boss — While not a Lizard, token floods enter with stacked counters once opponents have lost life.
- Skophos Reaver — A Lizard that triggers Gev's burn on cast and benefits from the counter snowball.
Upgrade Path
Add consistent early life-loss enablers (Impact Tremors, Purphoros, cheap burn, sac outlets) so creatures reliably enter with counters, and prioritize a stronger Lizard density to maximize the cast trigger. Improve the mana base with fast lands and Treasure/ritual support to deploy multiple spells per turn, and include counter-payoffs like proliferate or anthem effects. Round out with protection and recursion (Bolas's Citadel, reanimation) to survive wraths and keep Gev online.

Win Conditions
- ▸Swing with an oversized, counter-stacked board for lethal combat damage
- ▸Drain and ping opponents out with Impact Tremors / Purphoros-style ETB damage
- ▸Lizard cast triggers plus burn spells as direct-damage reach
- ▸Go wide with tokens that all enter buffed
Archetypes
- Aggro Counters — Gev makes your team enter oversized, letting you race opponents with a wide, hard-hitting board.
- Lizard Typal — Casting Lizard spells fires off direct damage, rewarding a tribal shell.
- Aristocrats — Repeated life loss from sacrifice and drain effects keeps the counter condition online while bleeding opponents.
- Burn/Spellslinger — Cheap burn ensures opponents lose life early so creatures land huge, then closes games with reach.
