Gran-Gran
The Commander
Whenever Gran-Gran becomes tapped, draw a card, then discard a card.
Noncreature spells you cast cost less to cast as long as there are three or more Lesson cards in your graveyard.
Guide
Gameplan
Gran-Gran is a one-mana looting engine: tap her every turn (and ideally multiple times per turn) to draw-then-discard, smoothing draws, filling your graveyard, and digging toward answers and payoffs. You play a mono-blue tempo/control game that grinds card advantage while assembling untap loops and a few Lessons to make your spells cheaper, then close with a value-based or combo finish.
Strengths
- Cheap, recastable commander that provides repeatable card filtering for just one mana to deploy
- Excellent in the 99 of control shells—loots every combat or untap cycle and fixes your draws
- Untap synergies turn her into an explosive draw-discard engine that can churn through half your library
- Discard half feeds graveyard payoffs, delve, escape, and flashback while smoothing late-game floods
Weaknesses
- Mono-blue offers no real reanimation, so the discarded cards are often just gone
- The Lesson cost-reduction is hard to enable—few Lessons fit a blue color identity, so it's mostly a bonus, not a plan
- She's a tiny 1/1-style body with no protection and dies to any removal, interrupting your engine
- Card filtering isn't card advantage—you draw AND discard, so you need outside draw to actually pull ahead
- Lacks a built-in win condition and can drift into durdling without a clear closer
Key Cards
- Thousand-Year Elixir — Untaps Gran-Gran so you can tap her again the turn she enters and double up on loots.
- Pemmin's Aura — Repeatable untap (and protection) lets you loot as many times as you have mana.
- Freed from the Real — With any mana rock you get infinite untap-loot to dig your whole deck.
- Intruder Alarm — Lets you crew/tap and loot off creature ETBs, chaining draws each turn.
- Thassa, Deep-Dwelling — End-step untap of Gran-Gran gives a free extra loot every turn and dodges removal.
- Thassa's Oracle — A clean payoff for all the digging and self-mill, winning on an empty or near-empty library.
- Teferi's Ageless Insight — Doubles every draw, converting Gran-Gran's filtering into real card advantage.
- Reliquary Tower — Keeps the cards you draw—important when you're churning so hard you'd otherwise discard to hand size.
Upgrade Path
Lean into untap engines (Freed from the Real, Pemmin's Aura, Thousand-Year Elixir, Thassa) plus a cheap mana rock to create deterministic loops, and add a clean payoff like Thassa's Oracle or Aetherflux Reservoir so the digging actually wins. Pair her with real draw engines (Teferi's Ageless Insight, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora) since looting alone doesn't generate advantage, and pack heavy interaction—counterspells and protection like Heroic Intervention substitutes (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves)—to keep her online. If you want the Lesson reduction to matter, prioritize the few blue/colorless Lessons and Learn enablers, otherwise treat it as upside and build a focused tempo-combo control list.

Win Conditions
- ▸Thassa's Oracle or Laboratory Maniac after milling/drawing yourself low
- ▸Big mana-sink finishers like Blue Sun's Zenith or Stroke of Genius to deck an opponent
- ▸Grinding the table out with card advantage and a value beater or token finisher (Mascot Exhibition / Talrand)
- ▸An infinite untap-loot loop feeding a payoff like Aetherflux Reservoir or a wheel-style closer
Archetypes
- Mono-U Control — Endless looting finds counterspells, board wipes, and removal while you outlast the table.
- Spellslinger — The Lesson cost reduction and constant filtering keep cheap instants/sorceries flowing for value and combo.
- Combo — Untap engines plus Gran-Gran can dig through the whole deck to assemble a deterministic win.
- Graveyard Value — The discard fuels delve, escape, and flashback cards as recurring resources.
