Katara, Waterbending Master
The Commander
Whenever you cast a spell during an opponent's turn, you get an experience counter.
Whenever Katara attacks, you may draw a card for each experience counter you have. If you do, discard a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast spells on opponents' turns to stack experience counters, then swing with Katara to refill your hand with a massive looting draw. You play a tempo-control game with flash threats, counterspells, and instant-speed interaction, building card advantage that fuels a finisher.
Strengths
- Cheap two-mana commander that snowballs card advantage every game it attacks
- Rewards interaction you'd already want to run (counters, removal at instant speed)
- Mono-blue gives access to the best card draw, counterspells, and tempo tools
- Experience counters persist through Katara dying, so the engine is hard to fully shut off
Weaknesses
- Katara is a fragile 2-power body that must connect to draw, inviting removal and blockers
- Loot effect forces a discard, so it's card-neutral unless counters are high
- Mono-blue lacks efficient creature removal and struggles against go-wide boards
- Needs to untap with Katara and a clear attack path to get value, vulnerable to a slow start
- Wheels and discard-matters payoffs are limited in mono-U
Key Cards
- Archmage Emeritus — Doubles up your instant-speed casting into extra cards alongside building experience counters.
- Aetherflux Reservoir — All your reactive spellcasting gains life and can fire off a one-shot kill.
- Mystic Sanctuary — Recurs your best instants to keep casting on opponents' turns and ticking up counters.
- Rhystic Study — Generates the raw card flow to always have an instant available during opponents' turns.
- Aqueous Form — Makes Katara unblockable so the draw trigger reliably connects.
- Snapcaster Mage — Flash spell that builds a counter on opponents' turns while recasting interaction.
Upgrade Path
Lean into cheap, high-impact instants (Fierce Guardianship, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Swan Song) and magecraft payoffs like Archmage Emeritus to maximize off-turn casts. Add unblockable enablers (Rogue's Passage, Spectral Sailor's evasion analogues) so Katara always connects, and include fast mana plus tutors to assemble Aetherflux Reservoir or a Thassa's Oracle line for a tighter combo finish.

- ▸Mill or combo finish enabled by the overwhelming card advantage the engine provides
Archetypes
- Tempo Control — Flash spells and counters defend you while building experience counters for inevitable card advantage.
- Spellslinger — Instant-heavy builds maximize off-turn casting to snowball counters and magecraft payoffs.
- Voltron — Evasion and protection let Katara connect every turn for huge loots and beatdown damage.
