Kykar, Zephyr Awakener
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Cast a high density of cheap noncreature spells to either flicker your own creatures for repeated ETB value or flood the board with 1/1 flying Spirit tokens. You build incremental advantage with blink loops and value engines, then turn wide Spirit armies or a few key payoffs into a lethal flying assault or a combo finish.
Strengths
- Doubles as a token engine and a blink engine, so every spell does extra work
- Flying body that pressures the air and protects itself
- Azorius gives premium counterspells, card draw, and removal to keep the noncreature count high
- Blink mode dodges removal and resets/abuses powerful ETB creatures
- Goes wide with evasive flyers that pump tokens love
Weaknesses
- Engine stops the moment Kykar leaves play, so it's recommander-tax sensitive
- Mono-spell-heavy builds can be light on board presence early
- Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your Spirit army
- No red means worse rituals and burn payoffs than the original Jeskai Kykar
- Can struggle to close before stax or faster combo decks if it durdles
Key Cards
- Ghostly Flicker — Repeatable blink target that loops with two value creatures and a recursion outlet for infinite ETBs.
- Archaeomancer — Returns an instant/sorcery on ETB, enabling Ghostly Flicker loops that grind value or go infinite.
- Mistmeadow Witch — On-board blink outlet that synergizes with Kykar's flicker mode and abuses ETB creatures.
- Approach of the Second Sun — A castable wincon in a spell-dense shell where you reliably draw and recast it.
- Cryptic Command — Flexible noncreature spell that triggers Kykar while protecting the board or drawing cards.
- Intruder Alarm — With Kykar's tokens and any untapper, it sets up engine and combo loops.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the curve with the best cheap cantrips and counters to maximize triggers per turn, and add efficient ETB creatures (Mulldrifter, Spellseeker, Solemn Simulacrum) to make blink mode pay off. Install a dedicated combo line such as Ghostly Flicker + Archaeomancer + Altar of the Brood, or Intruder Alarm + token-maker, for a reliable kill, and round out protection with Teferi's Protection, Heroic Intervention analogs, and counterspells to survive board wipes.

Win Conditions
- ▸Swarm of flying Spirit tokens buffed by anthems for a wide aerial alpha strike
- ▸Approach of the Second Sun for an alternate-win finish
- ▸Infinite blink/token loops feeding a payoff like Altar of the Brood or Walking Ballista
- ▸Commander damage plus evasion from Kykar and pumped flyers
Archetypes
- Spellslinger Tokens — Every noncreature spell can spawn a flying Spirit, snowballing a wide evasive board.
- Blink — Kykar's first mode flickers your creatures on command, abusing ETB value engines.
- Control — UW counters and removal naturally keep the noncreature count high while Kykar generates value.
- Combo — Blink loops with Archaeomancer/Ghostly Flicker and Intruder Alarm enable infinite tokens or mana.
