Unearthly Power — Instant and sorcery spells you cast cost {1} less to cast for each creature token you control.

Blade of Magnus — Whenever Magnus the Red deals combat damage to a player, create a 3/3 red Spawn creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a wide board of creature tokens to slash the cost of your instants and sorceries, then chain cheap (or free) spells into burn, draw, and extra value. Magnus himself is an evasive 5/4-ish flyer that snowballs by spitting out 3/3 Spawn tokens on combat damage, growing the very board that makes your spells cheaper. You win by either burning out the table with discounted X spells and spellslinger payoffs or going wide with tokens for a swarm finish.

Strengths

  • Cost reduction makes big X-spells and expensive bombs trivially cheap once you have tokens out
  • Magnus is evasive and self-snowballing, generating 3/3 Spawns that immediately feed his own discount
  • Strong synergy overlap between token strategies and spellslinger payoffs in Izzet colors
  • Doubling token effects compound both his discount and his go-wide plan

Weaknesses

  • A board wipe sets you back to square one, removing both the discount engine and your offense
  • Magnus is a 5-mana commander that needs to connect or build a board before paying off
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and stax that taxes spells or limits token creation
  • No built-in protection; he's a high-priority removal target as a Primarch

Key Cards

  • Young PyromancerTurns your discounted spells into more tokens, deepening the cost reduction loop.
  • Talrand, Sky SummonerEach instant/sorcery makes a flying token, snowballing both your board and Magnus's discount.
  • Krark, the ThumblessFree spell copies and chaos value that pair well with cheap-to-cast spellslinger turns.
  • Murktide RegentA massive evasive threat that closes games alongside Magnus's air assault.
  • Mizzix's MasteryReanimate-style spell recursion that becomes absurd when your spells already cost almost nothing.
  • Brudiclad, Telchar EngineerTransforms your Spawn army into copies of your best token for an explosive go-wide kill.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into token doublers (Ojer Taq, Mondrak) and free token generators so your spells hit zero cost faster, then add efficient X-spells and copy effects (Reverberate, Twincast) to convert that mana into a kill. Tighten the mana with fast rocks and Izzet rituals, and add protection like Heroic Intervention or counterspell backup so a single wipe doesn't end your game. For high power, build toward a deterministic storm or Brudiclad token-overrun line as your primary win rather than relying on combat damage.
