SP//dr, Piloted by Peni
The Commander
When SP//dr enters, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.
Whenever a modified creature you control deals combat damage to a player, draw a card. (Equipment, Auras you control, and counters are modifications.)
Guide
Gameplan
Build a +1/+1 counters and equipment/auras shell in UW, suit up evasive creatures, and turn every connection into card advantage. You ramp into SP//dr by turn 4-5, deploy modified threats, and grind opponents out with a steady stream of cards while attacking from multiple angles.
Strengths
- Repeatable, low-effort card advantage whenever any modified creature connects, including itself
- White and blue offer the best protection (counterspells, board wipes, removal) to keep your engine alive
- Vigilance plus an ETB counter makes SP//dr both an attacker and a blocker
- Synergizes with three deep archetypes at once: counters, equipment, and auras
Weaknesses
- Relies on creatures actually connecting—chump blockers and fogs can shut off the draw
- Removal on SP//dr or your equipped creature can blow out tempo and card investment
- UW lacks ramp and recursion compared to green/black, so a wrath can leave you behind
- No built-in evasion engine; you must supply trample, flying, or unblockable yourself
Key Cards
- Cathars' Crusade — Floods the board with counters, modifying every creature and supercharging your draw trigger.
- Shadowspear — Cheap equipment that grants trample so big modified creatures always connect, plus it modifies the holder.
- The Ozolith — Banks counters across board wipes, preserving your modification value after a sweeper.
- Sram, Senior Edificer — Doubles your card advantage by drawing off every Aura and Equipment you cast.
- Skullclamp — Turns cheap creatures into card velocity and stacks with SP//dr's draw triggers.
- Steel of the Godhead — Aura granting unblockable plus pump guarantees connection and triggers the modified draw every turn.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient tutors (Stoneforge Mystic, Steelshaper's Gift, Open the Armory) to assemble your best modifications consistently, and lean into proliferate and counter doublers like Doubling Season and Hardened Scales. Tighten the mana with fast rocks and dual lands, and include protection like Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention analogs, and counterspells to defend your invested creature from removal and wraths.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Voltron damage with a heavily modified, evasive creature carrying equipment and auras
- ▸Grinding opponents out with overwhelming card advantage into a wide counters board
- ▸Cathars' Crusade snowball turning a token swarm into a lethal alpha strike
Archetypes
- Counters (+1/+1) — SP//dr's ETB counter and draw clause reward proliferating and stacking counters across your board.
- Equipment Voltron — Equipment count as modifications, so suiting up one threat draws cards and pressures life totals.
- Auras / Voltron — Auras modify creatures and pair with Sram-style payoffs to fuel the draw engine.
- Blink/Value — Flickering SP//dr re-uses its ETB counter while card draw keeps the value chain rolling.
