Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir
The Commander
Creature cards you own that aren't on the battlefield have flash.
Each opponent can cast spells only any time they could cast a sorcery.
Guide
Gameplan
Lock opponents into sorcery-speed while you operate at flash speed, then grind out card advantage and control the board until you assemble a wincon. Teferi turns every creature in your library/hand/graveyard into an instant, so you ambush attackers, flash in blockers, and disrupt reactively while denying everyone else's instant-speed plays.
Strengths
- Shuts off opponents' counterspells, instant-speed removal, and combat tricks, making your stax/control pieces resolve safely
- Lets you cast all creatures at flash speed for huge reactive flexibility and ambush blocks
- Mono-blue consistency and access to the format's best card draw, counters, and tutors
- Strong asymmetric soft-lock that protects your own combo or stax engine
Weaknesses
- Mono-blue means little to no enchantment/artifact removal and weak creature interaction outside bounce
- Fragile 3/4 body that dies to any removal, resetting the lock
- Light on raw wincons—games can stall without a closer
- Doesn't stop sorcery-speed threats like big creatures, planeswalkers, or ramp on opponents' turns
Key Cards
- Teferi's Protection — Phases you out to dodge a board wipe or lethal alpha strike while protecting Teferi's lock.
- Brago, King Eternal — Flickers your permanents and, combined with stax, can create devastating lock loops while opponents are stuck at sorcery speed.
- Knowledge Pool — With Teferi out, opponents can only recast from the pool at sorcery speed, creating a brutal near-lock on their spellcasting.
- Cyclonic Rift — A one-sided board reset you can cast at instant speed while opponents can't respond.
- Rhystic Study — Premier mono-blue card advantage engine to fuel a grindy control plan.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crystal, Mana Drain) and efficient tutors to find your lock pieces faster, then commit to a tight combo or stax package—Knowledge Pool, Arcane Laboratory effects, and Brago flicker loops—so the soft-lock becomes a hard one. Prioritize protection for Teferi (Lightning Greaves, Teferi's Protection) and a clean blue combo finish like Thassa's Oracle with a way to empty your library.

Win Conditions
- ▸Grind to a controlling position and win with a few evasive flash threats or commander damage
- ▸Combo finish like Brago lock loops or an infinite mana/draw payoff protected by the sorcery-speed lock
- ▸Knowledge Pool plus stax pieces creating a hard lock that stops opponents from functioning
- ▸Big mana payoff or alternate wincon (e.g., Laboratory Maniac/Thassa's Oracle) cast safely under the lock
Archetypes
- Stax — Teferi locks opponents to sorcery speed so your tax and denial pieces resolve and stick without instant-speed answers.
- Control — Flash creatures plus counters let you hold up reactive answers while opponents must commit to the stack first.
- Flash/Tempo — Every creature gains flash, enabling ambush blockers and end-of-turn threat deployment.
- Combo — The sorcery-speed lock prevents disruption, letting you protect and execute a combo finish.
