Teysa, Orzhov Scion
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Teysa, Orzhov Scion is an aristocrats engine: turn black creatures dying into a flood of white flying Spirit tokens, then convert those tokens into removal, drain, and overwhelming board presence. You build a sacrifice loop, grind incremental value, and bury opponents under death triggers while picking off threats with the exile ability.
Strengths
- Generates a self-sustaining token engine—black creatures dying feed white Spirits, which fuel sacrifice outlets and the exile ability
- Built-in spot removal via the sacrifice-three-white-creatures ability that exiles, dodging indestructible and recursion
- Excellent in grindy attrition matchups where incremental card and board advantage win out
- Enables powerful death-trigger payoffs and recursion loops in Orzhov colors
Weaknesses
- Slow to start—needs setup and a critical mass of creatures before the engine snowballs
- Heavily commander-dependent; losing Teysa stalls both the token generation and your removal plan
- Vulnerable to board wipes that reset your token army and sacrifice fodder
- Light interaction outside the engine; can struggle against fast combo decks
Key Cards
- Pawn of Ulamog — Doubles your token output by making Eldrazi Spawn whenever non-token creatures die, adding mana and more sacrifice fodder.
- Bloodthrone Vampire — A free sacrifice outlet that grows huge while feeding Teysa's death triggers.
- Blood Artist — Turns every creature death into incremental life drain, converting your aristocrats engine into a win condition.
- Skullclamp — Draws two cards off your 1/1 Spirit tokens, turning the death engine into a relentless card-advantage machine.
- Grave Pact — Forces opponents to sacrifice every time your creatures die, locking down their boards.
- Reassembling Skeleton — A recurring black creature that loops in and out of the yard to generate Spirits on demand.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers and free sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Phyrexian Altar) plus drain payoffs to tighten the engine into near-infinite loops. Improve mana with fast rocks (Arcane Signet, Sol Ring) and tutors like Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor to assemble Blood Artist + a persistent sacrifice loop reliably. Round out with efficient interaction—Swords to Plowshares, Toxic Deluge—to survive while your engine sets up.

- ▸Lock opponents out with Grave Pact-style edicts and grind them to nothing
- ▸Combo finishes using free sac outlets, recursion, and token doublers
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Teysa rewards creatures dying with tokens, making sacrifice-and-drain the core strategy.
- Tokens — Her flying Spirits build a wide board that fuels anthems, sacrifice synergies, and the exile ability.
- Stax — Pairing her death triggers with Grave Pact effects strangles opponents' board development.
- Reanimator — Cheap black creatures that loop from the graveyard maximize repeated death triggers.
