Thryx, the Sudden Storm
The Commander
Flash (You may cast this spell any time you could cast an instant.)
Flying
Spells you cast with mana value 5 or greater cost less to cast and can't be countered.
Guide
Gameplan
Thryx is a mono-blue value engine that makes your expensive spells cheaper and uncounterable, so you flash him in then chain big finishers, board wipes, and game-ending instants/sorceries. Early turns ramp and durdle behind interaction, then deploy haymakers like Sphinxes, Krakens, and X-spells safely. Win through flying beaters and overwhelming card/mana advantage.
Strengths
- Makes 5+ MV bombs cheaper and immune to counterspells, protecting your wins from blue mirrors and control
- Flash and flying let him deploy at instant speed as a surprise blocker or finisher
- Mono-blue gives access to the deepest card draw, counters, and bounce in the format
- Supports a flexible toolbox-control or big-mana plan rather than a single fragile combo
Weaknesses
- Mono-blue lacks reliable enchantment/artifact removal and struggles against resolved problematic permanents
- Cost reduction only applies to MV 5+, so it does little for a low-curve build
- Relatively narrow as a deckbuilding hook; the deck does the work, not the commander
- Vulnerable to fast aggro and combo decks while you set up your expensive plays
Key Cards
- Consecrated Sphinx — A 5-MV uncounterable engine that buries the table in cards behind Thryx's protection.
- Cyclonic Rift — Overloaded for 7 it's MV 7, getting a discount and becoming uncounterable for a one-sided reset.
- Stroke of Genius — An uncounterable X draw or kill that benefits from Thryx's reduction at high X.
- Blue Sun's Zenith — Reusable, uncounterable X-spell mill/draw finisher that scales with your mana.
- Mind's Desire — High-MV storm payoff that can't be countered and gets cheaper, snowballing into a win.
- Aetherflux Reservoir — Cheap to fuel with a deck full of expensive spells, providing a hard mono-blue wincon.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Thran Dynamo, Gilded Lotus) to power out 5+ MV spells ahead of curve, and lean into infinite-mana shells like Palinchron/Dramatic Reversal-Isochron Scepter to fuel uncounterable X-spell kills. Tighten interaction with the best counters and free spells (Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain) and replace durdly bombs with tutors (Mystical Tutor, Fabricate) to find your closers. The higher the curve trends toward impactful 5+ MV cards, the more Thryx's discount and protection actually matter.

Archetypes
- Big Mana Control — Thryx discounts and shields top-end bombs while you counter and bounce threats.
- Spellslinger/Storm — Uncounterable, cheaper high-MV spells like Mind's Desire and X-draws chain into lethal turns.
- Sea Creatures/Tribal Beaters — Krakens, Leviathans, and Serpents all hit the 5+ MV discount and close games in the air or sea.
