Tomik, Wielder of Law
The Commander
Affinity for planeswalkers (This spell costs less to cast for each planeswalker you control.)
Flying, vigilance
Whenever an opponent attacks with creatures, if two or more of those creatures are attacking you and/or planeswalkers you control, that opponent loses 3 life and you draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Tomik is an Orzhov superfriends/aristocrats hybrid that flickers between defensive control and punishing aggression. You cast Tomik cheaply behind a wall of planeswalkers, then build a board state that forces opponents into bad attacks: anyone swinging at you with two or more creatures hands you life loss and free cards. Win by grinding the table out with card advantage, planeswalker ultimates, or a go-wide/aristocrats finish.
Strengths
- Free repeatable card draw and incremental life drain just for being attacked, which is huge in multiplayer politics.
- Cheap to cast (often 1-2 mana) thanks to affinity for planeswalkers, with evasive flying/vigilance.
- Orzhov gives access to elite removal, recursion, and lifegain payoffs.
- Naturally synergizes with go-wide tokens and aristocrats sacrifice engines.
Weaknesses
- The triggered ability relies on opponents choosing to attack you, which savvy tables will simply avoid.
- Lacks an inherent fast combo or evasive damage source, so games can stall.
- BW struggles with mass artifact/enchantment removal and ramp compared to other color pairs.
- Heavily reliant on the commander or planeswalker board, vulnerable to wraths and targeted removal.
Key Cards
- Elspeth, Sun's Champion — Pumps out blockers and pressures the board, advancing the planeswalker theme and lowering Tomik's cost.
- Sorin, Lord of Innistrad — Cheap planeswalker that makes lifelink tokens and discounts Tomik while building a defensive board.
- The Meathook Massacre — Premier Orzhov wrath that drains the table and protects your walkers from aggressive boards.
- Smothering Tithe — Generates the mana flood needed to deploy multiple planeswalkers and keep Tomik recast.
- Bitterblossom — Steady token stream creates blockers and aristocrats fodder while goading opponents into unfavorable attacks.
- Teysa Karlov — Doubles death triggers for an aristocrats package that grinds the table down alongside Tomik's punishment.
Upgrade Path
Lean harder into either superfriends (Doubling Season, The Wandering Emperor, Liliana of the Veil, Oath of Teferi) or aristocrats (Pitiless Plunderer, Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) rather than splitting focus. Add more cheap interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking, Toxic Deluge) and ramp/fixing (Smothering Tithe, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) to deploy walkers ahead of curve. For higher power, include a compact win like a Marionette Master/Krark-Clan Ironworks line or a reliable goad/curse package to force attacks into Tomik's trigger.

Win Conditions
- ▸Planeswalker ultimates (Elspeth, Sorin) overwhelming the board.
- ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects plus Tomik's life loss triggers.
- ▸Going wide with tokens and alpha-striking through flying/anthem effects.
- ▸Grinding opponents out with relentless card advantage and incremental drain.
Archetypes
- Superfriends — Affinity rewards loading up on planeswalkers, and Tomik defends them while punishing attacks against them.
- Aristocrats — BW token/sacrifice engines pair with Tomik's incremental drain to bleed the table out.
- Pillow Fort / Control — Tomik turns being attacked into card advantage, supporting a defensive, grindy game plan.
- Tokens — Go-wide token strategies provide blockers and finishers while supporting planeswalker protection.
