Anax, Hardened in the Forge
The Commander
Anax's power is equal to your devotion to red. (Each in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to red.)
Whenever Anax or another nontoken creature you control dies, create a 1/1 red Satyr creature token with "This token can't block." If the creature had power 4 or greater, create two of those tokens instead.
Guide
Gameplan
Anax is a resilient mono-red aristocrats/aggro commander that turns your dying creatures into a stream of Satyr tokens, then converts those bodies into damage. Flood the board, sacrifice and attack repeatedly, and use the token engine to grind through removal and board wipes while pushing devotion-fueled aggression.
Strengths
- Indestructible by default (returns as an enchantment, only dies via state-based devotion check)
- Generates value off board wipes and removal, blanking them
- Cheap 3-mana commander that's hard to permanently kill
- Synergizes with sacrifice outlets, big-power creatures (two tokens), and go-wide payoffs
Weaknesses
- Mono-red lacks reliable card draw and recursion compared to other colors
- Satyr tokens can't block, leaving you defensively weak
- Token swarm is vulnerable to wraths that exile and to fogs/edicts
- Devotion can collapse if your board is removed, sending Anax to the graveyard
Key Cards
- Goblin Bombardment — A free repeatable sac outlet that turns every creature death into damage and triggers Anax.
- Skullclamp — Draws two cards off each 1/1 Satyr while feeding the death trigger engine.
- Impact Tremors — Each created Satyr token pings every opponent, converting your token flood into direct damage.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Makes Treasure on each nontoken death, fueling explosive sacrifice loops with Anax.
- Mogis, God of Slaughter — Boosts devotion to red while punishing opponents, complementing the aggressive plan.
- Purphoros, God of the Forge — Each token entering deals damage and he adds heavily to red devotion, pumping Anax.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and devotion-boosters like Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and double-pip permanents to keep Anax huge, then tighten the aristocrats core with Pitiless Plunderer, Mayhem Devil, and free sac outlets. Lean into damage doublers (Fiery Emancipation, Torbran) and card advantage engines (Skullclamp, Outpost Siege) to offset mono-red's draw weakness and close games faster.
