Birgi, God of Storytelling // Harnfel, Horn of Bounty
The Commander
Whenever you cast a spell, add . Until end of turn, you don't lose this mana as steps and phases end.
Creatures you control can boast twice during each of your turns rather than once.
Discard a card: Exile the top two cards of your library. You may play those cards this turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Birgi turns your spells into mana refunds, letting you chain cheap spells and rituals to generate explosive storm-style turns. You flood the board with cheap red spells, generate mana off each cast, and either burn the table out or assemble a combo. Flipping to Harnfel late gives you a relentless card-advantage engine by trading discarded cards for double draws off the top.
Strengths
- Free red mana on every spell cast enables explosive storm and ritual turns
- Harnfel provides excellent card advantage and impulse draw in mono-red, a color starved for it
- Cheap to cast at three mana and offers two distinct angles of attack
- Synergizes brilliantly with cost reducers, rituals, and high-spell-count decks
Weaknesses
- Mana only persists for the turn and can't be spent on non-spell abilities directly without a payoff
- Mono-red limits access to tutors, interaction, and recursion
- Vulnerable to creature removal and the mana can be hard to actually use without sinks
- Storm/combo lines can fizzle if disrupted mid-chain
Key Cards
- Grapeshot — Premier payoff that converts a long spell chain into a lethal storm finisher.
- Underworld Breach — Recasts spells from the graveyard to fuel near-infinite storm loops with Birgi's mana.
- Jeska's Will — Massive ritual that, combined with Birgi triggers, produces huge bursts of red mana.
- Sensei's Divining Top — Free-to-recast spell that triggers Birgi repeatedly to generate filtering and mana.
- Birgi, God of Storytelling — The engine itself; every cast refunds red mana, snowballing your turn.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Mana Geyser, Pyretic Ritual, Desperate Ritual) plus zero-cost cantrips to maximize cast triggers, then commit to a dedicated combo finisher like Underworld Breach with Lion's Eye Diamond and Grapeshot. Improve consistency with mono-red tutors and card selection (Gamble, Wishclaw Talisman), and trim clunky high-cost cards in favor of more spell density to fuel the engine.
