Purphoros, God of the Forge
The Commander
Indestructible
As long as your devotion to red is less than five, Purphoros isn't a creature.
Whenever another creature you control enters, Purphoros deals 2 damage to each opponent.
: Creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with creatures and tokens so Purphoros pings each opponent for 2 every time something enters, turning go-wide strategies into a damage engine that wins without combat. You ramp early, deploy token makers, then unleash mass-token spells or repeatable token loops to drain the table out of nowhere.
Strengths
- Damage is unpreventable by blockers, life gain, or fog—it goes straight to face
- Indestructible commander that's hard to remove and cheap to recast pressure
- Punishes the whole table simultaneously, scaling perfectly in multiplayer
- Synergizes with virtually every red token, copy, and ETB effect
Weaknesses
- Mono-red lacks card advantage and struggles to refill after a board wipe
- Relies on a critical mass of creatures—does nothing on an empty board
- Enchantment-hate (Disenchant, Back to Nature) shuts the engine off cleanly
- No protection for the rest of your board against sweepers
- Damage triggers can be slow if you can't produce many bodies per turn
Key Cards
- Impact Tremors — A near-identical second copy of Purphoros's trigger, doubling every token's damage output.
- Krenko, Mob Boss — Generates explosive waves of Goblin tokens that each ping the table for lethal damage.
- Terror of the Peaks — Adds a second damage trigger on creature ETBs, stacking burn alongside Purphoros.
- Hordeling Outburst — Cheap multi-token spells convert directly into 6 damage to each opponent.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sac outlet that enables token-loop combos and powers mana for big swings.
- Skullclamp — Mono-red's best card draw engine, refueling token decks by sacrificing 1-toughness bodies.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crest, mana rituals) to deploy token engines a turn earlier, and build toward a deterministic infinite loop like Purphoros plus Ashnod's Altar with a self-recurring token creature for guaranteed kills. Prioritize the best redundant ETB-damage pieces (Impact Tremors, Warstorm Surge) and card-draw outlets (Skullclamp, Outpost Siege) to offset mono-red's biggest weaknesses.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Repeated creature ETBs draining all opponents from 40 to 0 via Purphoros pings
- ▸Infinite token loops (e.g., sac outlet + recursion) for unbounded damage
- ▸Going wide with a huge board and finishing with the +1/+0 pump attack
Archetypes
- Tokens — Every token entering triggers 2 damage, so mass token generation is the core engine.
- Aristocrats — Sacrifice and recursion loops let you re-enter creatures repeatedly for incremental burn.
- Combo — Token-loop engines plus a sac outlet can produce infinite ETBs for instant lethal pings.
