Torbran, Thane of Red Fell
The Commander
If a red source you control would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, it deals that much damage plus 2 instead.
Guide
Gameplan
Torbran turns every red damage source into a sledgehammer, adding +2 each time you deal damage to an opponent or their permanents. You assemble cheap, repeatable pingers and burn spells, then deploy Torbran and either fire off a wide burst of damage or loop a single source to one-shot the table. The deck plays like a hyper-aggressive mono-red spellslinger/burn build that closes games fast once Torbran sticks.
Strengths
- Massive damage multiplication that turns weak pingers and small burn into lethal threats
- Cheap commander at four mana with immediate impact
- Multiple sources stack with Torbran (each instance of damage gets +2)
- Mono-red consistency and access to strong ramp like Treasure and rituals
Weaknesses
- Heavily reliant on Torbran being on the battlefield; removal sets you back hard
- Single-color deck lacks access to counterspells and flexible interaction
- Vulnerable to lifegain and fog effects in a deck built around burn
- Can struggle against high-life or wide go-wide decks if the combo stalls
Key Cards
- Torbran, Thane of Red Fell — The engine itself—every red source you control hits for +2 per damage instance.
- Pyrohemia — Repeatable board-wide pings become 3 damage each, sweeping creatures and burning players.
- Heartless Hidetsugu — Halves opponents' life, and with Torbran the extra damage easily kills the whole table.
- Spikeshot Goblin — A repeatable equip-pumped pinger that scales absurdly with Torbran's +2 each shot.
- Walking Ballista — Each counter removed deals +2, letting it pick off creatures and players efficiently.
- Chandra's Incinerator — Burn becomes huge and it grows from all the noncombat damage you deal.
- Fireball — A scalable X burn spell that gains +2 per target hit, often lethal at modest mana.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Mana Crypt, Jeska's Will, Seething Song) to deploy Torbran plus a payoff in the same turn, and prioritize tutors like Imperial Recruiter and Gamble to find Heartless Hidetsugu or Spikeshot Goblin. Include protection such as Lightning Greaves and Deflecting Swat to keep Torbran online, and tighten the curve toward repeatable pingers that turn one activation into a full-table kill.
