The Commander

When Clive enters, you may discard your hand, then draw cards equal to your devotion to red. (Each {R} in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to red.)

{4}{R}{R}, {T}: Exile Clive, then return it to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control. Activate only as a sorcery.

(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter.)

I — Lunge — Ifrit fights up to one other target creature.

II, III — Brimstone — Add {R}{R}{R}{R}. If Ifrit has three or more lore counters on it, exile it, then return it to the battlefield (front face up).

Guide

Gameplan

Clive is a mono-red devotion payoff: drop him early to refill your hand based on red pips, build a wide board of cheap red permanents, then flip him into Ifrit to fight down blockers and dump huge bursts of red mana into X-spells or big plays. You churn aggression and devotion until you can convert mana and damage into a lethal turn.

Strengths

  • Card advantage via the discard-and-draw ETB scales hard in a dense mono-red devotion shell
  • Ifrit's Brimstone makes four red mana that fuels X-spells and explosive turns
  • Repeatable removal through Lunge fights and recastable from the command zone
  • Mono-red consistency and access to fast mana, rituals, and impulse draw

Weaknesses

  • The transform ability is expensive (6 mana, sorcery speed) and slow against fast combo
  • ETB draw is a gamble with low devotion or a strong hand you don't want to discard
  • Mono-red struggles with enchantment/artifact-heavy stax and lacks card-type interaction
  • No built-in protection; vulnerable to spot removal and board wipes that reset devotion

Key Cards

  • Fiery EmancipationTriples your damage output, turning Ifrit's mana and combat into instant lethal.
  • Torbran, Thane of Red FellBoosts all red damage and adds devotion while making burn spells overwhelming.
  • Birgi, God of StorytellingGenerates mana off every spell to fuel Brimstone-fed storm turns and adds devotion.
  • Comet, Stellar PupA cheap planeswalker that floods the board and contributes to red devotion.
  • Underworld BreachPairs with the big red mana from Ifrit to recur rituals for explosive combo turns.
  • Jeska's WillRefills your hand and dumps mana that feeds X-spells and Ifrit's gameplan.

Upgrade Path

Maximize red pip density with cards like Torbran, Birgi, and double-pip threats so the ETB draws full grips and Ifrit fires reliably. Add fast mana (Jeska's Will, Mana Geyser, rituals) and damage doublers to weaponize Brimstone's four mana into one-shot burn. For higher power, lean into Underworld Breach/ritual storm lines and tutors like Gamble to assemble a combo finish faster than the slow transform clock.
