Deadpool, Trading Card
The Commander
As Deadpool enters, you may exchange his text box and another creature's.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 3 life.
, Sacrifice this creature: Each other player draws a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Deadpool is a Rakdos value/chaos commander whose centerpiece is the text-box swap on entry: you stamp another creature's rules text onto Deadpool (or vice versa) to copy busted abilities cheaply. Play to the board, use the swap to turn Deadpool into the best creature on the table, and grind value while paying the 3-life upkeep tax. You close out with aggressive Rakdos beats, recursion loops, or whatever engine you steal onto your commander.
Strengths
- Flexible text-box swap lets a 4-mana body imitate far stronger creatures' abilities
- Rakdos colors give deep access to removal, recursion, and reanimation
- Synergizes naturally with life-loss payoffs and aristocrats themes
- Repeatable from the command zone, so the swap effect is reliably available
Weaknesses
- The mandatory 3 life every upkeep is real pressure with no payoff built in
- The sacrifice ability only helps opponents, so it's a near-dead drawback
- Text-box swap is awkward to set up and depends on having a great target in play
- No inherent card advantage or protection; Deadpool dies to any removal
- Color identity lacks blue/green ramp and counterspell support
Key Cards
- Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — A premier swap target—stamp its punisher/lifegain text onto Deadpool to offset the upkeep life loss and punish opponents.
- Bolas's Citadel — Pairs with the life-loss theme, turning your life total into a card-advantage engine to outrace the upkeep cost.
- Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose — Converts incidental life gain into direct opponent damage, giving the deck a real wincon around its life-total theme.
- Phyrexian Reclamation — Recurs Deadpool and key creatures cheaply, letting you re-trigger the text-box swap and rebuild after wraths.
- Bontu's Last Reckoning — Cheap board wipe that leaves your commander engine intact while resetting opposing boards in aggressive Rakdos.
- Anje's Ravager — Aggressive Rakdos card draw that fuels the deck and offers another strong text-box swap candidate.
Upgrade Path
Lean hard into life-loss payoffs and powerful swap targets so the upkeep cost becomes an asset rather than a liability—add Sheoldred, Vito, and Bolas's Citadel. Improve consistency with cheap tutors (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to find your best body to copy, and add recursion like Phyrexian Reclamation plus protection (Lightning Greaves) to keep the engine online. Trim the gimmick if it underperforms and prioritize a tight Rakdos removal/ramp base.

Win Conditions
- ▸Life-drain payoffs (Vito, Sanguine Bond, Blood Artist) converting the life theme into damage
- ▸Stamping a game-warping creature's text onto Deadpool and snowballing its ability
- ▸Straightforward Rakdos aggression backed by removal and recursion
- ▸Bolas's Citadel / life-as-resource loops fueling explosive turns
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — The built-in sacrifice clause and 3-life upkeep slot perfectly into a sacrifice-and-drain shell with payoffs like Vito and Blood Artist.
- Theft/Copy Value — The text-box exchange is a unique way to copy powerful enemy or owned creatures' abilities onto a recurring commander.
- Rakdos Midrange Beatdown — Solid 4-mana body plus removal and recursion supports a grindy, aggressive game plan.
- Reanimator — Black recursion lets you cheat out big swap targets, then move their text onto Deadpool for repeatable value.
