Erkenbrand, Lord of Westfold
The Commander
Whenever Erkenbrand or another Human you control enters, creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with cheap Humans, each trigger pumping your whole team +1/+0, then swing wide for lethal as the buffs stack across multiple bodies entering in a turn. You apply early aggression with one-drops and token makers, then alpha-strike once you have enough creatures and re-triggers from blink or repeated Human ETBs.
Strengths
- Stacks anthem effects fast—multiple Humans entering in one turn can add huge cumulative power
- Cheap, aggressive mono-red curve closes games quickly before slower decks set up
- Synergizes with token doublers and flicker effects for explosive +1/+0 bursts
- Low color requirements make mana easy and consistent
Weaknesses
- Only buffs power, not toughness—vulnerable to board wipes and chump blocking
- Loses gas in long games as mono-red struggles to refill the hand
- Buffs are temporary (until end of turn), so removal on Erkenbrand stalls the engine
- Weak to fogs, lifegain decks, and decks that go bigger or fly over your ground force
Key Cards
- Krenko, Mob Boss — Floods the board with Goblin tokens (and is itself non-Human, but the bodies enable mass attacks; pair with Human token makers for triggers).
- Adeline, Resplendent Cathar — Makes a Human token for each opponent on attack, triggering Erkenbrand multiple times and growing your team.
- Hanweir Garrison — Pumps out two attacking Soldier tokens each combat for repeated bodies to swing wide.
- Conqueror's Flail — Adds power and shuts off opponents' interaction on your turn so your alpha strike resolves.
- Skullclamp — Mono-red's premier card advantage engine, refueling your hand off cheap dying Humans.
- Impact Tremors — Turns every Human ETB into direct damage, giving reach beyond combat.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Anointed Procession-style red options are limited, but Mondrak isn't legal—lean on Hanweir Garrison, Brimaz, Krenko) and flicker payoffs to multiply triggers. Improve consistency with mono-red card advantage (Skullclamp, Outpost Siege, Wheel of Fortune) and protect the team with haste and anthem doublers. Top-end finishers like Purphoros, God of the Forge or Coordinated Assault plus a free-attack enabler convert your wide board into reliable lethal.
