Hajar, Loyal Bodyguard
The Commander
Sacrifice Hajar: Legendary creatures you control get +1/+0 and gain indestructible until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Hajar is a cheap GR commander that pushes a legendary-creature tribal strategy, flooding the board with powerful legends and protecting your key threats. Ramp into oversized legendary beaters, leverage 'legendary matters' payoffs, then sacrifice Hajar at the perfect moment to make your whole legendary squad indestructible through a board wipe or to win a critical combat.
Strengths
- Cheap two-mana commander that's effective even when not on the board, since you'll often want to sacrifice it
- Indestructible blanks board wipes and combat-based removal, protecting big investments
- GR offers excellent ramp and aggressive legendary creatures
- Strong synergy with the deep pool of legendary creatures and 'legends matter' payoffs
Weaknesses
- One-shot protection effect — once Hajar is sacrificed it's gone until recast
- Indestructible doesn't stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, or -X/-X removal
- Building around legendary creatures narrows deckbuilding and can hurt consistency
- No card advantage engine baked into the commander; relies on the rest of the deck
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate or being unable to recast Hajar at higher command tax
Key Cards
- Kethek, Crucible Pioneer — Rewards sacrificing your legendary creatures, including Hajar, by digging deep for more threats.
- Jegantha, the Wellspring — A legendary creature that ramps and fixes mana to power out your expensive legends.
- Selvala, Heart of the Wilds — Massive green ramp tied to your biggest creatures, accelerating your legendary bombs.
- Heroes' Podium — Anthem and card advantage that scales directly with how many legendary creatures you control.
- Captain Sisay — Tutors any legendary permanent, giving the legendary-matters shell incredible consistency.
- Kamahl, Heart of Krosa — Overrun-style finisher and land animation that closes games once your legends are protected.
Upgrade Path
Add fast green ramp (Sol Ring, Birds of Paradise, Cultivate) to consistently land expensive legends ahead of curve, and lean into tutors like Captain Sisay and Time of Need for consistency. Include a haymaker finisher such as Craterhoof Behemoth or Xenagos, God of Revels to convert your protected board into lethal, and prioritize legendary creatures that generate value on their own so the deck functions without relying solely on Hajar.
