Tannuk, Memorial Ensign
The Commander
Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, Tannuk deals 1 damage to each opponent. If this is the second time this ability has resolved this turn, draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Tannuk turns extra land drops into a steady stream of pings and cards, so you ramp aggressively and play multiple lands per turn to drain the table while refueling. You build a critical mass of land-drop enablers and fetch effects, then close with big landfall payoffs or repeated triggers that grind opponents to zero. Each turn you want at least two land ETBs to draw and deal 2+ to every opponent.
Strengths
- Cheap, resilient commander that provides built-in card advantage and reach in colors that normally lack draw
- Multiple-land-drop builds turn fetches and bouncelands into engines
- Scales into a slow group-drain that ignores blockers and toughness
- Green ramp makes recasting Tannuk and chaining lands easy
Weaknesses
- Pings only hit opponents 1-2 per land, so damage is slow without big landfall payoffs
- Heavily reliant on extra-land-drop effects to enable the draw clause
- Lands-matter shells are vulnerable to land destruction, Armageddon effects, and graveyard hate on landfall recursion
- Gruul lacks strong interaction, so combo and control decks can outpace it
- Tannuk dies easily as a small body and removal slows the engine
Key Cards
- Exploration — A second land per turn instantly enables Tannuk's draw clause every turn for one mana.
- Azusa, Lost but Seeking — Two extra land drops guarantee multiple landfall triggers and card draws each turn.
- Burgeoning — Free land drops on every player's turn turbo-charge the landfall engine.
- Scapeshift — Drops a pile of lands at once, drawing cards and dealing a burst of damage to each opponent.
- Ramunap Excavator — Replays fetchlands from the graveyard for repeatable landfall pings and draws.
- Crucible of Worlds — Recurs sacrificed lands turn after turn to keep landfall triggers flowing.
- Lotus Cobra — Turns the land-flood plan into explosive mana for big payoffs.
- Avenger of Zendikar — Converts your heavy land count into a board-wide token finisher.
Upgrade Path
Add more free extra-land-drop enablers (Exploration, Burgeoning, Oracle of Mul Daya, Wayward Swordtooth) and a full fetchland suite with Ramunap Excavator and Crucible of Worlds to maximize triggers. Layer in landfall damage doublers and explosive payoffs like Splendid Reclamation, Scapeshift, and Avenger of Zendikar to convert the engine into a kill. Tighten mana with Lotus Cobra and rituals, and include protection like Heroic Intervention to defend your board and lands.

Win Conditions
- ▸Grind opponents out with repeated landfall pings amplified by extra land drops
- ▸Land-recursion loops (Crucible/Excavator plus fetch or sacrifice outlets) for repeatable damage
- ▸Big landfall payoffs like Avenger of Zendikar or Scute Swarm creating a lethal board
- ▸Stacking landfall damage doublers and direct burn to alpha the table
Archetypes
- Landfall — Tannuk rewards every land ETB with damage and conditional card draw, making it the core engine.
- Lands / Ramp — Fetchlands, bouncelands, and extra-land effects feed both the engine and explosive mana.
- Group Slug — Repeated pings to each opponent let you build a low-grade damage drain alongside burn.
- Combo — Infinite or near-infinite land plays from recursion loops translate into lethal landfall pings.
