Hylda of the Icy Crown
The Commander
Whenever you tap an untapped creature an opponent controls, you may pay . When you do, choose one —
• Create a 4/4 white and blue Elemental creature token.
• Put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.
• Scry 2, then draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Hylda rewards you for tapping down your opponents' creatures: every untapped creature you tap triggers her, and for you snowball into 4/4 Elementals, anthem counters, or card draw. You stall the board with mass-tappers and ramp into repeatable tap effects, then convert those triggers into an overwhelming army or a wide counter-pumped board that closes the game.
Strengths
- Each tap trigger is value, so a single mass-tap effect can fire Hylda many times in one turn
- Doubles as defense and offense—tapping creatures blunts attacks while you build a board
- Three flexible modes cover tokens, anthem, and card advantage in one engine
- UW gives access to premier tap effects, protection, and board wipes to recover
Weaknesses
- Triggers cost
each, so without ramp you can't pay for big tap turns
- Heavily commander-dependent; removal on Hylda stalls the whole engine
- Modes only fire when YOU tap opponents' creatures—untapped attackers tapping themselves don't help
- Slow to start and weak to fast combo decks that ignore the board
Key Cards
- Kheru Spellsnatcher — Placeholder—prioritize repeatable mass-tappers; pair Hylda with effects that tap many creatures at once.
- Sleep — Taps down a whole opponent's board, firing Hylda once per creature for a massive value turn.
- Dragonlord Ojutai — Not core—focus instead on cards like Icy Manipulator for repeatable single-target taps each turn.
- Convergence of Minds — Skip; the real engines are cheap untappers and tappers you reuse every turn.
- Intruder Alarm — While risky, untap-on-cast loops can chain Hylda triggers, but mind the symmetry.
Upgrade Path
Add repeatable tappers like Icy Manipulator, Sword of the Meek/Thousand-Year Elixir style untappers, and mass-tap spells (Sleep, Cryptic Command, Dazzling Reflection-style) to maximize triggers per turn. Improve ramp with mana rocks (Arcane Signet, Talisman of Progress) so you can pay repeatedly, and protect Hylda with Swiftfoot Boots and Heroic Intervention. Finish faster by leaning on anthem doublers like Doubling Season for the counter and token modes, plus an overrun effect like Craterhoof or Finale of Glory equivalents.
Core Cards

Win Conditions
- ▸Overrun with a wide board of 4/4 Elementals pumped by repeated +1/+1 counter triggers
- ▸Combat damage from an oversized counter-buffed team after a mass-tap turn
- ▸Grinding card advantage with the scry-and-draw mode into superior threats and removal
Archetypes
- Tokens — The Elemental mode floods the board, and the +1/+1 mode turns those tokens into a lethal army.
- Control — UW tap effects, counterspells, and wraths let you stall while Hylda grinds incremental advantage.
- Pillow Fort / Stax-lite — Tapping down attackers each turn protects you while converting their threats into your resources.
- Go-Wide Aggro — Repeated 4/4 tokens plus team-wide counters build an explosive battlefield quickly.
