James, Wandering Dad // Follow Him
The Commander
: Add
. Spend this mana only to activate abilities.
Investigate X times. (Then exile this card. You may cast the creature later from exile.)
Guide
Gameplan
James is a mono-blue value engine: cast the adventure half "Follow Him" early to flood the board with Clue tokens, then deploy James to repeatedly add for activated abilities. You leverage all that colorless mana and artifact-token density into card advantage, big activated-ability payoffs, and eventually a combo or overwhelming engine turn.
Strengths
- Two free colorless per turn fuels mana-hungry activated abilities (equipment, planeswalker-less loyalty sinks, big X activations) without touching your land drops.
- "Follow Him" generates a pile of Clue artifacts, enabling artifact-matters, sacrifice, and card-draw payoffs.
- Cheap 3-mana commander that splits into two useful halves, smoothing curve and keeping resources flowing.
- Mono-blue gives access to the best card draw, counterspells, and untap/copy effects to abuse the mana ability.
Weaknesses
- The
can ONLY pay for activated abilities, so it's dead for casting spells and narrow without good ability sinks.
- Mono-blue lacks efficient removal and struggles against resolved big threats and enchantments.
- Clue tokens are slow card advantage that can be too durdly against fast combo or aggro tables.
- No inherent way to win—you must supply a finisher, or you just generate value with no closer.
Key Cards
- Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets James tap for mana the turn he enters and untaps him, multiplying your activated-ability fuel.
- Reki, the History of Kamigawa — Card-advantage engine, but more importantly cheap untappers and creatures with strong activated abilities pair with James's mana.
- Staff of Domination — A premier mana sink that turns James's colorless into card draw, untaps, and a life-gain/win engine.
- Reckoner Bankbuster — Repeatable Clue-like artifact whose activated abilities James can fund every turn.
- Trading Post — A flexible artifact engine with multiple activated abilities perfectly fed by James's two colorless.
- Sai, Master Thopterist — Turns your Clue/artifact density into a token army and card draw.
- Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas — Artifact synergy and a value-rich finisher that pairs with all your Clues and tokens.
Upgrade Path
Lean into untap and mana-sink combos: add Thousand-Year Elixir, Staff of Domination, Umbral Mantle-style untappers, and free artifact lands to maximize James's colorless. Tighten the deck with premium blue interaction (Counterspell, Swan Song, Cyclonic Rift) and fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Vault) so your engine comes online before the table, and include a clean two-card combo finisher so the value translates into actual wins.

Win Conditions
- ▸Assemble an infinite-mana untap loop (Staff of Domination, Thousand-Year Elixir, etc.) into a draw/damage outlet.
- ▸Grind out card advantage with Clues and artifacts, then close with a beater like Tezzeret or a big artifact creature.
- ▸Sacrifice/repurpose Clues into a thopter or token swarm with payoffs like Sai or Reckoner Bankbuster.
- ▸Out-value and lock the table with a mana-fueled engine plus mono-blue control until you deck or alpha-strike them.
Archetypes
- Artifacts — "Follow Him" spits out Clues and James generates colorless mana, anchoring an artifact-token and big-activation build.
- Activated Ability / Untap Combo — James's repeatable mana ability begs for untappers and abilities that loop into infinite mana or draw.
- Control — Mono-blue counters and card draw protect a slow value engine until you stabilize and grind out the table.
- Spellslinger-lite Value — Clue draw plus blue card filtering keeps a steady stream of answers and engine pieces flowing.
