Kodama of the East Tree

The Commander

Reach

Whenever another permanent you control enters, if it wasn't put onto the battlefield with this ability, you may put a permanent card with equal or lesser mana value from your hand onto the battlefield.

Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)

Guide

Gameplan

Drop permanents to trigger Kodama, then chain progressively cheaper permanents from your hand onto the battlefield for free, snowballing your board until you out-resource and out-size the table. Each landfall, token, or creature ETB cascades into another permanent, letting you dump your hand explosively in a single turn. You close games with a flood of bodies, oversized threats, or value engines that opponents can't keep up with.

Strengths

  • Explosive single-turn board development that turns one drop into a chain of free permanents
  • Extreme value engine that empties your hand cheaply and refills via green card advantage
  • Pairs with any Partner commander to splash a second color and broaden strategy
  • Reach plus big green bodies makes it a resilient combat presence

Weaknesses

  • Triggers only on equal-or-lesser MV, so chains stall on top-heavy hands
  • Mono-green (without a Partner) lacks interaction and removal
  • Six-mana commander that does nothing the turn it lands
  • Board wipes punish the go-wide overcommitment Kodama encourages
  • Wants a specific curve of permanents; clogs on too many high-cost cards

Key Cards

  • ScapeshiftSacrifices lands to fetch a pile of lands, each landfall ETB chaining permanents from hand.
  • Tireless ProvisionerMakes Treasure or Food on every landfall, fueling extra triggers and ramping the chain.
  • Crucible of WorldsReplays fetched/sacrificed lands every turn for repeatable cheap ETB triggers.
  • RealmwalkerLets you keep casting creatures off the top, feeding a hand of permanents to chain.
  • CultivateCheap ramp that puts a land into play, triggering Kodama while smoothing mana.
  • Avenger of ZendikarFloods the board with Plant tokens and pairs with landfall to dominate the table.

Upgrade Path

Pick a Partner like Tana, the Bloodsower, Ishai, or Reyhan to add color, removal, and a focused win angle. Tighten the curve toward cheap permanents (mana dorks, Treasure makers, ETB creatures) so chains never fizzle, and add land-recursion engines like Crucible of Worlds plus fetch effects to maximize triggers. Cap it with a haymaker finisher such as Craterhoof Behemoth or Finale of Devastation to convert your board into lethal.

Win Conditions

  • Overwhelming the table with a wide board of creatures and tokens via combat
  • Cheating out huge payoffs like Craterhoof Behemoth or Avenger of Zendikar
  • Infinite ETB loops with cheap permanents, a bounce/sac outlet, and free mana
  • Grinding insurmountable card and board advantage until opponents run out of answers

Archetypes

  • Landfall/RampEvery land drop triggers Kodama, so fetching and replaying lands generates relentless chains.
  • Tokens/Go-WideToken producers each enter as permanents, snowballing the board and feeding triggers.
  • Value/MidrangeKodama turns each permanent into a cascade of more permanents, out-grinding opponents.
  • ComboLoops with self-bouncing permanents and free mana can create near-infinite enter triggers.
