Ghalta, Primal Hunger
The Commander
This spell costs less to cast, where X is the total power of creatures you control.
Trample (This creature can deal excess combat damage to the player or planeswalker it's attacking.)
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with cheap, high-power creatures, then deploy a heavily discounted (often two-mana) Ghalta and beat down with a 12/12 trampler. The deck wins by going wide-and-tall fast, then connecting with Ghalta and other fatties to deal massive trample and commander damage.
Strengths
- Explosive starts—dumping creatures early makes Ghalta cost almost nothing
- Mono-green gives access to the best ramp and consistency in the format
- Trample makes chump blocking nearly useless
- Cheap to rebuild after a board wipe since green excels at recursion and card draw
Weaknesses
- Crippled by board wipes—loses both Ghalta's discount and the offense
- Single-target removal on Ghalta resets her cost dramatically
- No evasion beyond trample; flyers and fogs can stall the ground
- Mono-green lacks interaction, counterspells, and ways to stop combo decks
Key Cards
- Steely Resolve — Names Dinosaur to give Ghalta hexproof, protecting your discounted threat from removal.
- Garruk's Uprising — Grants trample to your team and draws a card whenever a power-4-plus creature enters.
- Return of the Wildspeaker — Refills your hand by drawing equal to your biggest creature's power, perfect after committing fatties.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — The premier finisher—turns your wide board of big creatures into lethal trampling damage.
- Selvala, Heart of the Wilds — Both a power-dump that lowers Ghalta's cost and a ramp engine that taps for huge mana.
- Heroic Intervention — Cheap blanket protection against board wipes and targeted removal.
Upgrade Path
Lower the curve with efficient high-power one- and two-drops (Steel Leaf Champion, Nest Invader, Dryad Arbor) so Ghalta is reliably free, and add fast ramp like Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, and elf mana-dorks. Invest in protection (Heroic Intervention, Vines of Vastwood, Snakeskin Veil) plus recovery engines (Beast Within, Heroic Intervention, Return of the Wildspeaker) to fight removal, and include a guaranteed haymaker finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes to close before the table stabilizes.
