Longshot, Rebel Bowman
The Commander
Reach (This creature can block creatures with flying.)
Noncreature spells you cast cost less to cast.
Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, Longshot deals 2 damage to each opponent.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast a high density of cheap noncreature spells, using Longshot's cost reduction to chain them and deal 2 damage to each opponent every time. You win by grinding everyone's life total down through repeated triggers backed by burn, copy effects, and free spells, often closing with a big X-spell or storm-style turn.
Strengths
- Each noncreature spell hits every opponent for 2, turning cantrips and rituals into damage
- The
cost reduction makes spell chains and storm turns dramatically cheaper
- Commander-based damage engine that works even when the board is stalled
- Mono-red gives access to deep burn, rituals, and impulse draw to keep gas flowing
Weaknesses
- Mono-red lacks card draw and selection compared to other spellslinger colors
- Longshot is fragile at 4 mana and a removal magnet once opponents see the engine
- Symmetrical 'each opponent' damage doesn't pressure a single threat fast enough late
- Vulnerable to lifegain, fog effects, and stax pieces that tax noncreature spells
Key Cards
- Birgi, God of Storytelling — Adds a red mana per spell cast, fueling explosive chains that pile up Longshot triggers.
- Storm-Kiln Artificer — Makes Treasure for each instant/sorcery, effectively making spells free and refueling chains.
- Jaya's Greeting — Cheap, reduced removal that also pings everyone for 2 via Longshot.
- Reiterate — With buyback and rituals it loops infinitely for unlimited Longshot triggers, a clean win.
- Aria of Flame — Stacks extra damage on top of every spell cast, accelerating the kill while Longshot already pings.
- Underworld Breach — Recasting spells from the graveyard generates massive trigger counts for a single-turn kill.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Jeska's Will, Seething Song, Mana Geyser, Pyretic Ritual) plus cost reducers like Ruby, Daring Tracker and Helm of Awakening to enable explosive Longshot turns. Build toward a deterministic combo finish such as Reiterate + ritual or Underworld Breach + Wheel of Fortune, and lean on impulse draw (Light Up the Stage, Wheel of Misfortune) to beat mono-red's card-advantage problem. Protect the engine with Deflecting Swat and Pyroblast.

Win Conditions
- ▸Chaining noncreature spells to deal repeated 2-damage Longshot triggers to all opponents
- ▸Infinite spell loops like Reiterate + ritual or Underworld Breach for unbounded damage
- ▸Big X burn spells (Fireball, Comet Storm) finishing off softened tables
- ▸Aria of Flame or similar stacking damage enchantments amplifying every cast
Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Longshot rewards casting as many cheap instants and sorceries as possible with cost reduction and damage.
- Storm/Combo — Rituals plus cost reduction and mana producers enable explosive chains and infinite buyback loops for the win.
- Burn — Direct damage spells double-dip as both removal and Longshot-fueled face damage to all opponents.
- Control — Cheaper counters and removal let you hold the board while passively draining everyone each turn.
