Oloro, Ageless Ascetic
The Commander
At the beginning of your upkeep, you gain 2 life.
Whenever you gain life, you may pay . If you do, draw a card and each opponent loses 1 life.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if Oloro is in the command zone, you gain 2 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Oloro grinds the game out as a control deck, gaining incremental life and converting it into card draw and opponent life loss every turn—even from the command zone. You hold up interaction, stabilize behind board wipes and lifegain triggers, then bleed the table dry while out-resourcing everyone. The deck wins slowly and inevitably rather than racing.
Strengths
- Generates value (life, cards, opponent life loss) from the command zone without ever casting Oloro
- Esper colors give access to the best removal, counterspells, and board wipes
- Lifegain payoffs scale into incremental card advantage and a slow win condition
- Excellent late-game inevitability once a lifegain engine is online
Weaknesses
- Very slow and reactive early; weak to fast combo and aggressive starts
- Oloro's drain requires repeated
payments, taxing your mana
- Relies on lifegain triggers—do-nothing lifegain cards can clog the deck
- High vulnerability to graveyard hate and counterspell-light strategies that race the board
Key Cards
- Sanguine Bond — Turns every lifegain trigger into direct damage, comboing with the deck's gain engine to kill the table.
- Exquisite Blood — Pairs with Sanguine Bond for an infinite drain loop that ends the game instantly.
- Felidar Sovereign — A standalone alternate win condition since Oloro keeps your life total comfortably above 40.
- Cliffhaven Vampire — Cheaper Sanguine Bond effect that drains opponents on each lifegain event.
- Smothering Tithe — Premier ramp and card-quality engine that fuels Oloro's per-trigger
payments.
- Rhystic Study — Doubles down on Oloro's card-advantage plan in a control shell.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ramp (Mana Crypt, Arcane Signet, Smothering Tithe) so you can afford Oloro's repeated payments and deploy interaction earlier. Tighten the lifegain suite to only cards that double as payoffs or ramp, cut do-nothing gainers, and lean on a compact combo (Bond/Blood, Aetherflux) as a reliable closer. Round out with premium counterspells and board wipes (Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, Swords to Plowshares) to survive to your inevitable late game.

Archetypes
- Lifegain Aristocrats — Oloro converts lifegain into card draw and drain, rewarding dense lifegain payoff packages.
- Control — Esper interaction plus command-zone value lets Oloro durdle, answer threats, and win late.
- Combo — Sanguine Bond/Exquisite Blood and lifegain loops provide compact infinite-drain kills.
- Stax — Slow value from the command zone makes Oloro a strong stax pilot who profits while opponents are locked down.
