Guide

Gameplan

Orthion turns a single value creature into an army for a turn. Use his cheap ability to copy a creature with a strong ETB or attack trigger, and ramp toward the 9-mana mode to make five copies at once for a explosive, game-ending burst. The haste tokens swing or trigger, then sacrifice—so you want bodies whose value comes from entering play, leaving combat, or attacking.

Strengths

  • Generates massive ETB/attack value from one good creature for low mana on the cheap ability
  • Mono-red is consistent and cheap, with deep ramp and rituals to power the big mode
  • The five-copy mode is a one-card win when paired with the right creature
  • Tokens sacrificing themselves enables aristocrats and death-trigger payoffs for free

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on the commander; without Orthion the deck does little
  • Vulnerable to removal, summoning sickness exploits, and graveyard/tap-down hate
  • Tokens vanish at end step, so chump-defense and persistent board presence are weak
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and interaction outside of burn

Key Cards

  • Combat CelebrantCopying it grants extra combat steps—five copies means a one-turn-kill engine.
  • Port RazerEach copy that connects grants another combat, snowballing into lethal with Orthion's tokens.
  • Terror of the PeaksEach copy's ETB and the others entering deal stacking damage that can wipe a table.
  • Magmatic ForceA copy-friendly bomb, but the real all-stars are damage-on-ETB and combat creatures.
  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror BreakerRedundant copy effects let you double down on your best creature without Orthion.
  • Jeska's WillBurst mana to reach the {6}{R}{R}{R} five-copy mode ahead of schedule.
  • Thousand-Year ElixirUntaps Orthion and removes summoning sickness so he activates the turn he lands.
  • Dockside ExtortionistCopying it floods you with Treasures to immediately fuel the big activation.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and rituals (Mana Geyser, Jeska's Will, Dockside) so you reach the five-copy mode early, and include redundancy like Kiki-Jiki and Twinflame to protect against Orthion removal. Lean into one or two true combo finishers (Combat Celebrant for the kill, Terror of the Peaks as backup) and add haste/untap enablers like Lightning Greaves and Thousand-Year Elixir. Round out with mono-red card advantage (Wheel of Misfortune, Outpost Siege) to keep the gas flowing.
