The Commander

Changeling

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, if it targets one or more other permanents you control, create a token that's a copy of one of those permanents.

When a spell or ability an opponent controls causes you to discard this card, create a token that's a copy of target permanent.

Guide

Gameplan

Orvar churns out token copies of your best permanents every time you cast a cheap instant or sorcery that targets them, snowballing into overwhelming value or a combo finish. You spend the early game ramping and protecting Orvar, then chain cantrips, bounce spells, and protection spells that incidentally target your own creatures, lands, or artifacts. Each copy compounds your board, mana, and engines until you bury opponents or assemble an infinite loop.

Strengths

  • Generates explosive card and board advantage from cheap, replayable spells
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, card draw, and protection
  • Token copies of mana rocks/lands enable huge ramp and combo potential
  • Highly flexible—any targeted spell becomes a value engine
  • Changeling makes Orvar relevant for tribal synergies and creature-type payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Extremely commander-dependent; stalls hard if Orvar is repeatedly removed
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient removal and life gain
  • Token copies are legend-vulnerable and can be wiped by board wipes
  • Needs setup pieces on board before spells generate value
  • Telegraphs combo lines, inviting interaction from blue-heavy tables

Key Cards

  • Cloudstone CurioWith cheap creatures and free spells it enables infinite bounce-and-recast loops to make unlimited Orvar tokens.
  • Dramatic ReversalTargeting your untap-producing rocks while Orvar is out copies them, generating infinite mana with enough nonland mana sources.
  • Mystic ReflectionA targeted shaping spell that combos beautifully with Orvar's copy trigger for repeatable value.
  • BrainstormCantrips that can target your permanents are the cheapest way to repeatedly trigger Orvar's copy ability.
  • Displacer KittenCasting noncreature spells blinks your permanents, letting you reuse rocks while feeding Orvar copies.
  • Mana DrainPremium counterspell that protects Orvar and ramps you into your token engine.
  • Sea Gate RestorationA modal land/spell and big draw payoff that refuels the spell-heavy deck.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring) and untappers (Dramatic Reversal, Isochron Scepter) to enable infinite-mana combos that close games quickly. Layer in strong protection (Heroic Intervention via blue's Veil of Summer alternatives, plus counterspells like Swan Song and Pact of Negation) so Orvar survives, and include tutors like Mystical Tutor and Personal Tutor to find your engine pieces. Tighten the curve toward free and one-mana cantrips so every turn produces multiple Orvar triggers.
