Rowan, Scion of War

Gameplan

Rowan turns your own life total into a discount engine: deal yourself damage or attack/take damage, then tap Rowan to slash the cost of your black and red spells, often casting huge bombs or chaining multiple spells for free. You leverage life loss (fetches, painlands, shocks, self-damage) and aggressive combat to enable explosive turns. Close games by deploying an overwhelming board or comboing off with cheated-out spells.

Key Cards

• Bolas's Citadel — Lets you cast spells off the top by paying life, generating exactly the life loss Rowan needs to discount everything else.
• K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth — Pays for black spells with life, fueling Rowan's discount while letting you spam costly bombs.
• Sign in Blood — Cheap card draw that intentionally loses life to power up Rowan's cost reduction.
• Torment of Hailfire — A scalable X-spell that becomes a game-ending haymaker once Rowan slashes its cost.
• Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands on combat damage, letting a menacing Rowan enable double spell-heavy turns.
• Vilis, Broker of Blood — Draws cards off life payments and is a huge body you can cheat out cheaply with Rowan's discount.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient life-loss enablers (fetchlands, painlands, Phyrexian mana spells) so Rowan's discount is online every turn, and pair them with payoff bombs and X-spells. Lean into life-as-resource pieces like Bolas's Citadel, K'rrik, and Vilis for explosive engines, and include protection (Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention) to keep Rowan alive. For maximum power, build toward a deterministic loop—Aetherflux Reservoir or infinite mana into Torment of Hailfire/Exsanguinate.
